Photo Vampyroteuthis - Vampire Squid
Prehistoric, a living fossil? Very interesting!
The Vampire Squid also known as Vampyroteuthis. (Vamp - ire - o- tooth - is)
It is actually not a squid, and its not an octopus. It is in its own animal group being neither an octopus nor a squid called Vampyromorphida.
When you watch the video you will see that its red coloring adds to its already scary self! It also has the largest eyes of any animal compared to its body size.
Even though it looks big and scary in these videos and pictures its only about 6 inches to 1 foot long. It lives deep in the oceans where there is almost no light at all and where the water is around 35 to 45 degrees which is about 2 to 6 degrees Celsius.
They have BLUE BLOOD! Their blue blood's carries oxygen throughout its body.
It has light organs which it can turn on and off. It uses the lights to protect its self.
The Vampire Squid does not squirt black ink like other squids instead it send out a sticky mucus that is like blue fireworks. It can do this for up to 10 minutes to confuse its enemy and hopefully swim away into the dark ocean.
By drawing up the skin between their arms like an inside-out umbrella
showing the underside of the caped arms it sorta looks like a pumpkin.
There is a great photo of Vampyroteuthis at this site . . .http://www.lifesci.ucsb.edu/~biolum/organism/pictures/vampy.html

The Colossal Squid
You may have heard of the Giant Squid, what about the Colossal Squid?
It is even larger than the Giant Squid.
In 1925 a sperm whale was caught that had bitten off two tentacles of a Colossal Squid. The tentacles were found inside the sperm whales stomach!
Then in 1981 some fishermen caught one that measured about 14 feet, is was a young female.
They found one in 2003 that was 20 feet in length.
The biggest one caught was off the Antarctica coast in 2007.
Some fisherman from New Zealand caught it. The squid measured about 33 feet when caught. Now that’s a big Squid! No that’s a COLOSSAL SQUID!

JAWS!
Sharks have rows and rows of teeth. They will never run out of teeth. If one gets broken off there is one right behind it to take its place.
Sometimes sharks teeth wash up on the beaches and you can find them. You can tell what kind of Shark it is because each type of shark has its own type of teeth.
Unlike us and most animals both the sharks upper and lower jaws move.

Stingrays
First film of a 'giant' stingray

Stingrays are known to be gentle however, if provoked, like any wild creature, they will defend themselves.
They seem to only attack in self-defense. Most humans get stung when someone accidentally steps on a stingray that is buried in the sand and the stingray whips up its tail and pops the human in the leg or ankle. The stingray has a very sharp stinger.
There is also poison in stingray's stinger. It will hurt a lot but most of the time a person will survive the sting. Check out this Video of Jeff Corwin when he was walking along the beach and stepped on a stingray OUCH!

"Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin was tragically killed by a stingray .
If a stingray stinger hit’s a person in the heart, it is very bad. That is what happed when the "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray.
