Unemployment: Disaster or A Blessing In Disguise?
60
Are You Among the Ranks of the Unemployed? Worried You Might be Next?
With today's economy, there are more and more people finding themselves on the unemployment line. Are you one of them?
December's figures showed that Canada's job losses were an estimated...
34,000 and the United States suffered its worst job losses since 1945 - an estimated 524,000 jobs - bringing 2008's total to 2.6 million jobs lost.
Soaring unemployment in the United States promises to dampen the Canadian economy even further, leading to more job losses in 2009.
Many people closely identify themselves with what they do for a living.
Losing your job can lead to losing track or who you are and why you are here.
Being laid off, getting dismissed or fired, receiving your walking papers because of cut backs, downsizing and plant closures can lead to a variety of life-altering events. You may go through a variety of feelings, including denial, fear, anger and frustration, but eventually you have to adapt to the situation.
First, practical issues must be addressed.
A major issue is determining how long your finances will last toward providing for yourself and your family. Do you have a way to pay the bills, keep a roof over your head, buy groceries and cover health insurance? A lot of people have health benefits through their employer - once your job is gone, so are your health benefits.
Make sure that you look into and apply for unemployment compensation immediately and find a health benefits provider. At least then some of your worries will be covered.
Preparing for a layoff? Here are some options...
If you are still working, but see the possibility of a job loss some of your options right now are:
- Take time for yourself - exercise, take up a hobby, meditate, relax
- Keep on networking - keep in touch with anyone in your network, take this opportunity to help others (it is through giving that you will receive)
- Skills - want to learn some new skills or brush up on your old ones
- Would a career change benefit you - are you tired of doing the same old thing - always wanted to try something new (do you have a dream)
Unemployment could be a blessing in disguise.
Joining the ranks of the unemployed doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. Count your blessings - maybe this is a gift.
Have you ever considered new employment choices, ever wanted to be your own boss. Want to set some new goals to make your life better. Assess your marketable skills and turn these skills into your own business. Market your knowledge and experience. Put your focus on your strengths and past successes.
Starting or owning your own business could be way better than what you left behind!
An online business could be the blessing in disguise that we've talked about. When one door shuts another one opens.
Have you ever considered the benefits of being your own boss?
- No one but yourself to answer to
- More time to spend with children or grandchildren - wouldn't it be nice to watch them grow up, and spend some quality time with them while they do
- More time with your spouse
- Financial freedom
- Time freedom - to travel, visit friends and family
- The satisfaction of building a successful business of your own
Being unemployed may turn you into a successful internet network marketer.
No lies here, though. Internet marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme.
It will take a lot of hard work and dedication, patience and persistence. It will take sacrifice in the beginning. There will be times when you just want to give up. But continuing to believe in yourself and what you are building will pay off in the long run.
Marketing yourself and your skills is the best way to get started when your building your online business. Attraction marketing is the way to brand yourself with your target audience.

Thank you Shelly,
I know that there are a lot of people out there that are really worried about this issue. I hope that they will have the courage to at least try a work from home business, it could be so rewarding for them.
Yet again another great hub Patricia! Well put together and great information!
Often times we find ourselves in situations where we are not in control of situations that affect us. This is a great example of how we can take responsibility and learn a new skill like you mention in your article.
I think sitting down with pen and paper and listing all the skills you currently have is a good way to take stock of your talents. It may also help define a direction to get started in if you are looking into starting your own business.
Yours is an encouraging look at unemployment and the fear that holds for many.
Thanks,
Theresa
Celestial Messages,
Thank you for your comment, I appreciate the time you took to read and comment on my hub.
Theresa,
I find that sitting down with pen and paper is a great way to take stock of yourself and your talents. Sometimes you don't realize what you have to offer until it's in black and white.
Unemployment is very stressful, but looking in a new direction may be very motivational to a lot of people.
Excellent hub Patricia. It's a great idea to start a home business before you get laid off. And even if you don't get laid off, you not only have extra income but also peace of mind. And if things go well, then you can fire your boss! Thanks for planting the seed for those who may be considering taking on a new venture, but aren't sure what to do.
Tlhanks Cindy,
I wish someone would have planted the seed in my mind years ago. Whether or not you are working a job away from home, a home based business is a great way to make some additonal income for yourself.
Patricia,
We all have so many gifts that are not being utilized when we work for someone else. Working from home and being your own boss can bring out the best in you and allow you to explore other business options that could work long term. Good things can come out of bad things. Internet Marketing is a great long term option.
Thanks, Becky Joubert
Thanks Becky,
I agree that internet marketing is a great long term option, to utilize the gifts that we all have and very seldom get a chance to use, unless you're very lucky and have found a job that you're passionate about.
Excellent job Patricia!
I like how you did this hub. Your perspective was unique. Presenting the present reality of the soaring unemployment. Then giving them real solutions that really work. Thank you for the excellent hub.

Thank you for your insight Patricia;
Thousands of people are looking for a way out of their situation, and they are looking at the internet for answers. I hope they find this hub and read it carefully because you do outline a way out for those who are willing to do some hard work.
You also warn people about the get rich quick schemes. They don't work and as you say they are designed to make the originator rich and no one else.
Nice one Patricia keep up the good work.

marketingmergenow,
Thank you for your comment. I really think that the solution of an online business will work for anyone who is dedicated enough to work hard at learning the skills required. I keep learning something new every day and I appreciate all the support from the Renegade Community.
Grant,
Thank you for commenting. And yes, avoiding the get-rich-quick schemes out there is something we all need to do. I know when I first started on the internet I was like many new marketers, bouncing from one place to another, hoping to find that golden opportunity.
It wasn't until I found The Renegade Network Marketer and then Renegade University that I realized I was going about everything all wrong.
Sometimes we cannot influence or change the situation around us, such as the weather or lay off from the job. But you are absolutly right - we should adapt the situation and it could be a great life point to start something new.
Thanks
Thank you Patricia,
As painful as a job loss can be it never ceases to amaze me how resilient people can be. There is not a day that goes by where I hear of people starting over doing what they love to do but never had the time to do it before. Yes, starting something new before you lose your job is the ideal situation. Taking control of ones OWN life is essential now more than ever before.
As Robert Kiyosaki says, looking to the internet and creating your own wealth online is key.

Patricia,
I like how you mentioned United States and Canada in your Hub. So often that insight is not given and it helps to hear that. Thank you. Kathy
JMGMarketer, Angela & Kathy,
Thank you for your comments.
Adapting to the different situations in your life and making the most of them (or the BEST of them) is a great way to start something new and exciting, something that you are passionate about, something that will make you feel good about yourself - what you are capable of and what you can do to help others.
Patricia
Patricia,
This is an excellent hub... You know when working for someone else you never know your time. So, its always an excellent choice to have your plan in place...

Thank you Donna,
I think one of the smartest things you can do for yourself in today's tough economic times, is to realize that working for someone else may not get you through. There are so many places closing their doors, that you don't know from one day to another whether you're going to have a job. I feel that planning for your future NOW is of the utmost importance.

The economy and job market are frightening these days. More and more people are finally understanding that they must take control of their lives and stop depending on others for their financial stability.
Unfortuantely some unscrupulous folks are more than willing to take advantage of this situation for their own gain.
Thank you for this level headed and honest information for dealing with these job loss issues so important to people today.
