So you're planning your big day, but you keep thinking about how you want your wedding to be as unique as you. You want your special day to stay in their heads for years and in yours forever! You need to figure out just who you are and your fiance are first, and then build your original recipe from the ground up. Are you genuine music lovers? Are you dancers with a passion for your art? Or are you food connoisseurs with an undying desire for the finest in cuisine delights?

You don't have to go with a theme as overwhelming as a Hawaiian luau to get your point across, but there is a lot you can do to define your originality. Do you have fond memories of the beach and want to have a sunset ceremony? Or perhaps you met at a concert and you want to have some live music play during your cocktail and dinner hour to soothe and entertain your guests with the unique energy of live music? All of these ideas and factors should be discussed so you can figure out what truly makes your character and how you can convey this to your guests.

In no particular order, one can begin to see areas of originality from the follow examples.

The Location

Finding a spot that is as unique and different as you and your loved one can be a challenge. There are plenty of resources and even photo blogs from entertainers and photographers to see what it is really like to have a reception or ceremony at some of the locations in your area. The best idea would be to find something that you are both very happy about and something you feel your guests will be too. If they are big dancers then you want to make sure that you have an ample dance floor with a lot of room and a decent layout for the wedding DJ.

Art galleries or museums in your area might be a great way to bring an original touch to your reception. Something classy and elegant like an old restaurant or reception hall in a beautiful park or nature reserve is also something to think about.

Make it Yours

Something that you can bring throughout the reception and ceremony to your guests is a good idea. Are you and your fiance world travelers? How about naming the tables after countries and have pictures of the two of you at the center piece of each table with the name of the country. You can keep the travelers theme throughout the event with places you'd like to go or maybe a photo slide show of either your traveling honeymoon together or the places you have already been together to show them truly how made for each other you really are.

The Decor

This is a great way to turn a not-so-elegant place into an amazing wedding site. You can have floating candles or maybe even fishbowls with a beta fish in it and flowers pouring out of the top? Lighting is huge, so make sure you are working with your decor and lighting.

Intimate Touches Do you have a lot of room to fill? What about bringing in some couches or end tables to create a lounge feel? You can have standing height cocktail tables near the bar with party foods at the center of the tables.

Lighting Lighting and more Lighting

You want to make sure you don't forget that lighting is absolutely paramount in creating a mood for your guests. Do you want them to feel under a microscope when they are the dance floor with huge florescent lights beaming from above. Try candles, floating candles, the rope lighting or even Christmas lights to line a corner or edge of the room. If you are using a professional venue be sure to test all of the different lighting modes with them before you book. If they have skimped on dimmers then you might not want to book the venue!

Indulge

Espresso bars are a great idea as well as chocolate fountains! You could have a nice pick me up at the end of the night to get your guests back out on the dance floor with some espresso and melted chocolate floating down from level to level as your guests smother innocent fruit with it's warm deliciousness. These are the types of things that will really make your guests love your wedding over the others they've been to.

Entertainment Ideas

Ever thought of hiring a professional dance team for a dinner show? What about a funny magician to make your guests loosen up? Live music for either cocktail or dinner is another great idea and it'll add a touch of class to the overall sounds of the evening. Something about having a string quartet play some beautiful romantic music while you are being served appetizers and drinking martinis while dressed to the nines is truly memorable.

More important than any of this, make sure that you truly show your guests who you and your loved one are. You want to highlight your features and show it to them in your reception. There are an abundant traditions with a wedding, but there are also plenty of ways to make it truly your special day. Don't be afraid to be a pioneer and try something off the wall and new. I am sure your guests will thank you for it, especially if your wedding is only one of the many they will have to attend that year! As a San Diego DJ I am bias in saying that a DJ is a great worry-free way to ensure the success of your wedding reception.

I have to second betherickson's comment, great idea for a reception. There's not much in the way of great reception halls in my area, most weddings and receptions are held in the local churches.
