The Coin Test

A coin, which has two sides, should, in theory, if tossed 100 times, land heads-up 50 times. BUT this can only happen if all the VARIABLES affecting the coin remain constant.

That is to say that, if the temperature, wind speed etc, and all other variables, remain the same, then the coin has a 50/50 chance of landing heads-up 50 times out of 100.

The same can be said of horses. If all the conditions are EXACTLY the same as they were, when it last won a race, then there is a very good chance of a repeat performance.

THE VARIABLES -

FORM – Important as it is, cannot be relied on solely to predict the outcome of a race. Most punters use it as their only yardstick. But, like humans, horses have their ‘life-cycles’(or good days & bad days).

WEIGHT – The weight that the horse will be carrying is important, especially if it is for the first time.

DISTANCE – This is extremely important and should certainly be taken into account. If the horse that you fancy is running a ‘new’ distance, then think very carefully before taking the plunge.

JOCKEY – Try to select a top jockey to be riding your choice. They have access to the best stables & the best horses. NB THERE ARE SOME VERY GOOD APPRENTICES BUT try to avoid the newcomers ie the 7lbs claimers. I have had great success over the years with more experienced claimers (ie 3lbs & 5 lbs) because they still get reasonably decent rides BUT, quite often, very high prices (a 20/1 each way that is placed is OK by me!!)

GOING – Very important. Many horses have a preferred surface on which to run. Some prefer it like concrete and some muddy. TAKE GREAT CARE.

The racing this week so far has been of a very poor standard. I hope to have more news of some runners today.
