House breaking 101

So here's the type of calls / email i get. I let my dog out a million times a day and he/she is still going in the house.

Hmmmmm- Question #1 Did you paper train?

Q#2 Do you go outside with him/her?

There are 2 very common misconseptions working here. First, you expect your dog as a puppy to wee on something on the floor in the house, then learn to go outside. Outcome: Congratulations, you have just taught your dog to wee on things on your floor. For instance, papers, area rugs, and clothing.

Misconseption #2. If you let them out they will go! Field of dreams? Dogs actually need to be taught thats where you want them to go.

Solution: Step 1: Say "gotta go outside?" Go outside with your dog, say "go potty" or pick your own word. When the dog goes potty, throw a party right in the middle of the act, "oh my gosh what a good dog did you go potty outside".

Step 2: If you catch them in the act say "no" outside. Get them out immediately and repeat step 1. No yelling just clean it up and move on.

Bonus: Your dog should start to give you a signal when you say "gotta go outside" look for scratching at the door, putting their head on your lap and whining could be anything, be on the lookout. If you do this repeatedly, your dog should be fairly reliably housebroken in under 4 weeks.
