Bankruptcy and Credit

Obtaining an unsecured credit card after bankruptcy might not be as hard as you think it is. Actually, those who have filed bankruptcy even have a few things in their favor. But creditors will still impose penalties for being in bankruptcy, simply because they can and because some people who have filled bankruptcy aren’t aware of the advantages that they have.

Applying for an unsecured credit card after bankruptcy is you telling a creditor that you are ready to jump bank in to the financial world again. But the fact is, you won’t have to go very far to apply for an unsecured credit card. They will more than likely be filling up your mailbox with applications!

The difference between a secured credit card and an unsecured credit card is that the secured credit card requires you to open an account with funds already in it. Your credit limit for that account will be the funds that you have in the account. An unsecured credit card is one that doesn’t require an account or “security” for you to open a line of credit.

Honestly, getting an unsecured credit card after bankruptcy is one of the best ways for you to start rebuilding your credit, as long as you use it wisely and make your payments on time. For one it provides a credit line that can be seen on your credit report. Not only that, it’s an unsecured credit line. Paying on unsecured credit lines tells creditors that you are serious about paying your bills, even when you don’t have anything to lose.

The only thing you really have to be careful of when obtaining and unsecured credit card after bankruptcy is the interest rates. Credit card companies will offer you credit cards left and right, but they usually carry very high interest rates. The key is to get the cards that start with no interest rates. Credit card companies usually offer this as a promotional deal for a limited amount of time. Not only is that a great deal, but it also gives you a chance to start rebuilding your credit in a gradual sort of way. If you start out with a credit card that has no interest, then all you are paying on is the principle. This at least gets you into the habit of making payments. Then when the interest starts getting added on you simply have to begin paying on the interest as well.

If you get an unsecured credit card after bankruptcy then you really need to use it to your advantage. You would think that if you pay off the balance every month this would look great on your credit, but that’s not true. You need to carry a balance on the card for it to do your credit any good. Even if the balance is only $5, at least there is one. And really, the main goal when getting an unsecured card after bankruptcy should actually be to use it to rebuild your credit.
