Unto us a Child is born
48I took a drive down town yesterday night. The Christmas lights seemed to beckon to me in a visual wonderland- lights twinkled and sparkled from every side, crowds of all people jostled on the sidewalk, and at every junction, human traffic spilled over the street. It was a familar scene and yet the mood seemed somewhat different. Families beaming with warm smiles were everywhere but shades of somberness coloured the vening air. In my car, the radio crackled with the evening news: stock prices went down, companies retrenching staffs, bankruptcies, etc...
Instinctively, my eyes looked up towards the heavens. I peered past the decorations streamed across the road to catch a glimpse of the sky. Where is God in the midst of this chaos? The words of Isaiah 9:6 came to my mind. - "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given. And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counseller, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
Quietly, in the santuary of my car, I remembered that Jesus stepped into our broken workd, a world mired in pain and suffering, a world wrestling with anger and bitterness, a world tainted by our sin and selfishness. Jesus stepped into this world to save us from sure destruction.
Lets focus our thoughts on Jesus and find renewed strength, hope and purpose in our Lord and Savior this Christmas!
