Well everyone who follows football knows why I am updating my Bears Mock Draft. If you don't, you must have been living under a rock. But I will fill you in anyway. Yesterday, the Bears traded for QB - Jay Cutler and a 5th round pick in this years draft. The Bears gave up a 1st rounder this year, 1st rounder next year, 3rd rounder this year, and QB - Kyle Orton. In my opinion, as well as a lot of other peoples, they gave up too much. But we will not get into that. I would like to be known as providing information, and not opinions. Trust me though, I have a lot of opinions, just as everyone else. I am kind of eating my own words as, that is all a mock draft is really, an opinion. On paper, Cutler is an upgrade over Orton. Except for Orton's overall record as a starting QB. Cutler has a far superior arm than Orton. Both are smart. A stat to throw out though, Cutler was 13-1 when his defense gave up only 21 points. Looks good for the Bears. But, Orton was 15-2 at home for the Bears. You can throw out all of that stuff though, as both will be playing in a different type of offense, will have different receivers, and different teams. Only time will tell if the Bears, or Broncos, made the right move. One thing is for sure, Cutler had to be traded and the Bears were the takers.

Also, the Bears signed LT - Orlando Pace, from the St. Louis Rams. Bringing in a grand total of 5 free agents that Jerry Angelo has signed so far this off-season. Who would have thought? Pace is towards the end of his career and has had injury problems the last few years. He did play in 14 games last year. I read somewhere, not sure if it is credible though, that Pace only gave up 2 sacks in those games. When healthy, he is an upgrade over anyone the Bears had before. He can also tutor the younger lineman, which is a plus.

Now the offensive line looks better. Again, who would have thought that just a few weeks ago. The QB position is upgraded. Another who would have thought. So, the obvious question in most peoples minds is.....Who is going to catch those rockets from Cutler? As of now, the Bears have Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, and Rashied Davis. With Devin Aromashodu, John Broussard, and Brandon Rideau likely fighting for the last 1 or 2 receiver spots. Not exactly a who's who of receivers. A nice side note, Bennett was Cutler's favorite receiver at Vanderbilt. That only helps. So the obvious need is receiver. Other needs are DB (CB or S), DL, FB, and OL, not necessarily in that order. The Bears do need to draft at least two WR's, a possession receiver and another guy. A nice youthful LB to put behind Urlacher would be nice too. Now the Bears can draft with a, best player available scenario. Adding someone like Torry Holt would go a LONG way to making it even more of a best player available draft. But that is only a wish at this point. So here we go.

Unlike before, since there is no first rounder, I will be giving 4 possibilities for the second round choice. Then, 3 possibilities each round there-after. I have added one more player scenario to each round now that I have done more research on the players available. You will also notice a lot of WR's as options. This does not mean I want the Bears to draft everyone of these receivers. They are just options if they draft someone else, at a different position, with one of those picks.

2nd Round (#49): Let me start off by saying that I would like Britt or Roebiskie, but they most likely will not be here when the Bears pick. Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina, might be. But, he gained 20+ lbs between the Combine and his Pro Day. A big red flag! That tells me that he will have a problem staying in shape.

S - Darcel McBath - Texas Tech - Is the type of player that fits in the system that the Bears run. Has good speed and is a play maker. Could be a little bigger and will have to add some strength. Like Barden below, the Bears can trade down a little bit and still pick him up.

WR - Ramses Barden - Cal Poly - He will be a tremendous Red-zone threat. He is 6'6", 229lbs. Has shown in workouts that he can catch and run solid routes. Solid forty time for someone his size, 4.54. I liken him to Vincent Jackson, who plays for the Chargers. This might be a little high for him. If the Bears like him, they could trade down to the late 2nd/early 3rd round to get him. While also picking up extra picks.

DE - Paul Kruger - Utah - Non-stop motor. Bears need a pass-rushing DE and Kruger fits the bill. Also good against the run. Has really moved up after the Sugar Bowl. He is older than most, 24, as he went on a mission while at Utah.

CB - Darius Butler - U Conn - This guy is most likely gone by this pick, but someone always falls. If D.J. Moore falls, because of his forty time, I would rather the Bears pick him. Butler has the whole package to be like Ronde Barber, who also played in the Tampa-2 system. This guy is a great cover corner, just needs to bulk-up.

(Found out last night, April 22nd, that Percy Harvin had a confirmed positive test for Marijuana. He might drop to #49. If he does, and the Bears feel that it will not be a problem, I say take him. Although, someone has to be real stupid to fail a drug test at the combine. As they know exactly when that test will be. Which tells GM's one of two things, that player is dumb or has a substance abuse problem.)

3rd Round- Comp. Pick- (#99):

DE - Brandon Williams - Texas Tech - Good fit in Bears system. Needs to add weight though. Has good burst and can close fast. Not an all around end though, more suited to be pass-rushing end while he bulks up and learns in the pros.

C - Jonathan Luigs - Arkansas - If Luigs is gone, C-Antoine Caldwell would be a good choice as well. Luigs has been the center for one of the better rush attacks in college the last few years. Solid in both pass and run protection. Needs to get stronger, relies to much on his technique and quickness. Which is not a bad thing. Olin Kruetz is not getting any younger and the Bears need to be looking for his replacement. Josh Beekman can play center though.

WR - Louis Murphy - Florida - This might be too late to get him. If so, Juaquin Iglesias would be a solid choice. Murphy has good size and speed. 6'2", 4.32 forty. Might need some time. Not very physical.

4th Round (#119):

CB - Christopher Owens - San Jose St. - This guy has really moved up draft boards. Good run support corner (Which is a must in Bears defense), with solid cover skills. Nice fit in Bears system.

OT - Jason Watkins - Florida - Not really needed, as Bears have enough bodies on the o-line. Would be a good pick though. Needs to add strength and will take a year or two to develop. Could learn behind Bears starters. Is a solid technician and has all the tools to be starting tackle in the NFL.

TE - Richard Quinn - North Carolina - Bears probably won't take a TE, but if they did this would be the guy to take. Can block and catch. Although he did not do much of the latter in college, as he had 3 NFL caliber WR's there at the same time. Desmond Clark is not getting any younger, and this is a strong year for TE's. While there is no guarantee that the class of TE's over the next few years will be this strong.

5th Round - From Denver (#140):

WR - Mike Wallace - 'Ole Miss - I really like this kid. He looks the part. His workout #'s fit his college production. I think he will be the steal of the draft. Also is fast, ran a 4.28 forty. I am usually not a speed guy, as they usally bust, but this guy is a true wide-out.

WR - Patrick Turner - USC - Tall red-zone threat. 6'5" and had a solid pro-day. A little slow, but would be used strictly as a possession receiver. Which the bears really need, the tallest receiver they have is 6'3".

S - David Bruton - Notre Dame - His work-outs may have pushed him up to the 4th round. Has the speed needed in the Tampa- 2 system the Bears run. Very productive college player. Although he did not really make the players around him better.

5th Round (#154):

ILB - Frantz Joseph - FAU - Good student of the game. Productive college career, played at Boston College before transferring to FAU. Better against the run. Kinda reminds me of a better H. Hillenmeyer.

FB - Brannan Southerland - Georgia - Tough player. Can do it all, except he won't be a great short yardage threat at the next level. Would be an instant upgrade over anyone the Bears have now. Can also play special teams, which is a pre-requisite for a later pick. Has had some injury problems at Georgia. Tony Fiamatta, from Syracuse, would be a better fit, but most likely will be gone by this pick. Quinn Johnson, from LSU, is the best blocker in the draft as well.

OG - Travis Bright - BYU - This might be a little early. But most likely would be gone when the Bears pick in the 6th round. I had him as a FA in my other mock draft, but I was wrong on that one. This guy is strong, and would be an upgrade over Garcia at RG, or at least give him a run for his money.

6th Round (#190):

DT - Roy Miller - Texas - After the first few guys, there are not many DT's in this draft. Miller would be worth a later pick. Not very tall, only 6'1" and has shorter arms. He is VERY strong, doing 36 reps of 225lbs. Could produce as a wave player on first and second downs.

S - Curtis Taylor - LSU - Definitely looks like an NFL safety. Has all the tools, just hasn't produced like he should at the college level. Good coaching might bring him out of his shell.

WR - Marko Mitchell - Nevada - Another big red-zone threat at 6'4". Good speed for someone his size, just takes awhile to get up to speed. Needs to get a little bigger, as he has a skinny frame for his size.

7th Round- Comp. Pick (#246):

CB/S - Glover Quin - New Mexico - Would fit better in the Bears system as a Safety. Solid against the run and pass. Likes contact. Also has experience as a kick-off returner.

WR - Jordan Norwood - Penn St. - This guy has the hands of a first rounder, but that's about it. Needs work on routes. Only 5'10" 175lbs. Would never be more than a 3rd or 4th receiver. The hands would be an instant upgrade over Rashied Davis though.

OT/G - Dan Gay - Baylor - Versatile lineman. Only played on the o-line the last 2 years, after switching over from the d-line. Did play well though. Project, with some upside, for the practice squad.

7th Round- Comp. Pick (#251):

DE - Stryker Sulak - Missouri - Good pass rusher. Has a non-stop motor. The Bears like to take pass rushing ends in the middle to late rounds, to fit into the "wave".

WR - Taurus Johnson - South Florida - Good possession receiver. Had a good game in the East-West game for prospects. Bears went down to USF's pro day to scout him.

WR - Brian Hartline - Ohio St. - Should have stayed in school. This guy is a project with some upside.

If you want to see some rookie free-agents that would fit in well with the Bears, check out my previous Mock Draft at the following web address....
