Urban Bicycle Commuting
49Share the Road
Bicycle Commuting is a fun, economical way of getting to and from work, school or places you just like to hang out. WHile most people think its just for green weenies or tree huggers, bicycle commuting is actual one of the fastest growing segments of the transportation sector.
While everyone these days seems to acknowledge the effects on our environment of greenhouse gases and most of us would love to do something about them, we typically make excusses why we can't.
I was among the general populus until my last job took me around the world trouble shooting technology problems for major corporations. What I recognized on this adventure is that cultures the world over have adopted the bicycle as a great means of not just cutting traffic congestion and carbon emissions, but a very real way of living.
I say living, because once you make the commitment to commute on your bike your eyes are opened to an entirely new lifestyle. New to you, but as I have also discovered, not new to much of the rest of the world. In fact, a article made available through Princenton Univiersity illustrates that bikes far out number cars and more people travel daily on bikes than all other means of transportation. That's right, 4 Billion bicycles are out there today versus a meager 400 million cars. The Chineese government recently published statistics that more than 500 million Chineese citizens use their bicycles daily as their primary means of daily transportation. Bike commuting indeed is far more prevelant than most people ever imagined.
While all that may be great and true, for those of us that live in locations with less than desireable winter or summer weather conditions can't even imagine jumping on a bike to make a short commute to the store, work or school. Its always easier to say that everyone else is doing the right things so those of us that live in less desireable place don't have to. I was of that mind set until I began my commuting jorney.
Consider using your bike not just as a means of commuting to work or school, but think of it in terms of changing your transpotation lifestyle. Maybe its not practical to ride to work. Consider your bike for running errands. Use it for trips to the store, a friends house or just to get out and see your neighborhood. It always amaze me how few people know more than their immediate neighbors.
Start the the thought process and we will delv more into the rear heart of the matter in other conversations. In future hubs I'll post more about the pitfalls I've found with picking the right clothes, the right bike, the right accessories and most of all the right route.
For those of you already commuting I'd love to hear how it has changed your life. Link this hub, borrow anything I might say or post. Nothing I do is proprietary or something I don't want to share.

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback. I am writing a follow up. While it seems as easy as dusting off your bike and just riding it, I have found there actually is a little planning that has to go into your commute to make it as easy as possible. I should have it up in a few days.
Thanks

It's still amazing to me that people are rediscovering the bicycle as a means of everyday modality. I was stunned by the 4 Billion bike statistic as it seems in the United States the number of dealers continues to shrink. Maybe it's just a US thing, but for a country that sets so many world standards we seem to be last to fall i line on this one.
