Used Campers
67Buying used campers
Buying a used camper can be a daunting experience so we have put together some guidelines that may help you.
This checklist is meant to be used a a guideline. For a complete guide showing you what to look for and how to avoid the pitfalls you need to download the RV Buyer's Guide.
Mechanic - When checking out a vehicle take a trained and trusted mechanic with you to give a thorough check over the engine, brakes and the mechanical side in general.
Batteries - Make sure that the batteries hold enough charge to turn the engine over. The camper should be able to start close to the first time.
Brakes - Make sure the brakes are working well as they will have a big load to stop. Check handbrake too.
Oil - Take a look at the color of the oil. If it has a sort of white foam then it might mean that additives have been added to mask bad engine seals. If it is blueish or has a burned smell this too indicates grave engine problems.
Service Records - Ask to take a look at any service history and the receipts for any work or maintenance that might have been undertaken. The paperwork will show you how many previous owners the camper has had. Check that the VIN number on the paperwork is the same as that on the camper.
Rust - This may or may not be a problem. Small rust spots on metal panels may be cleaned up, treated and painted over but if larger areas are showing or the rust seems to be under the body panels then a lot more work will be involved. If there is rust on the frame then this indicates that the camper is on its last legs and should not be considered as a possible purchase.
Propane System - Check out the hoses, the propane tanks, and the regulator. Ask to see any certification of safety that may have been issued.
House Batteries - These should be able to hold their charge as they will supply power to all of the internal electric system when there is no external hook up connected. Make sure there is no corrosion on the battery terminals. If there are solar panels fitted make sure that they are putting back some of the charge at a constant rate.
Floor - Inspect the carpet for damp patches and make sure that there are no soft spots underneath. Damp on the floor is usually a sign of leaks in the water system an may be repairable by the damage done may already be extensive and have rotted wood and rusted metal.
Ceilings - As with the floors look out for damp patches especially in corners and hidden areas such as over cupboards. Damp ceilings are an indication of a leaky roof which is not a simple job to repair.
Toilet - Make sure the toilet is holing water as this is what stops the smell from the black-water tanks from coming back up into the bathroom.
Air Conditioning - This should be able to blow cold air constantly. Gas top ups for weak systems are available but can be costly and may even indicate that the air conditioner is no longer holding the gas.
Heating - The heating system should be able to blow hot air into the whole living space and heat the water as well.
General Checks - Check all doors, windows, vents, cupboards, lockers both outside and inside the vehicle. Turn on and off every electrical item, check all of the lights outside and inside.
Insurance - Some models of campers were recalled with manufacturers defects and others have engine sizes too big or axle weight out of proportion and as such are deemed un-insurable by most insurance companies. Check with your insurers with the exact make, model and year before the final purchase.
This list is to serve as a general guide when buying your motorhome. To really know what to look for and what to avoid you need to check out the RV Buyers Guide.
All the best finding your used campers,
