Finding your French Style

If you're here, then you probably love the look of French Decor, too.  The question you may be asking is how to get 'that look' in your home.

I think the look of French decor can be broken down into three separate categories:  Paris Apartment, Classic French European, and Country French.  Of course, any of these three can be combined to give your decor a unique and personal feel!

Paris Apartment

When I think of the style of the Paris Apartment, I see black and white furniture with rich velvets and silks in fuscia and deep royal blues.  Mixed with these are guilded mirrors in all different sizes and accents of cool marble statues or porcelain figures.

I'm reminded of Audrey Hepburn, poodles, berets and corner cafes.  If you could throw all of these things into a giant decorating blender and push 'pulse' you'd get the Paris Apartment style I envision.

Classic Euro-French

What can I say? The name sums it up!

Think big heavy red velvet drapes with large wooden framed mirrors in gold or dark wood. Deep blue walls. Lots of books on shelves in any kind of order, books on tables, books on heavily brocaded ottomans. Thick fuzzy rugs and silk throw pillows. Large portraits of little girls standing in black velvet dresses with a little dog at their side. Picture windows with writing desks. Miniature ceramic busts and random teacups.

Country French

Who doesn't love the thought of the rustic French countryside with its fields of lavender, olive trees and vinyards.  This style calls to mind large weathered wooden tables, creme-colored cottons, white-washed cupboards and old dusty bottles of wine.

French decor is really stylish and as we are very fortunate to live in France so we can frequently visit the Brocante and the Depot de Vente's for bargains. Great way to spend a Saturday morning.

I love French style decors, and often visit a shop in a near-by town that specialises in importing all manner of French items. The French seem to enjoy colour more than we Brits, and perhaps that's part of the attraction.
