Using Hubpages as an online Resume or CV

Making Money on Hubpages
I see a lot of talk about how much money you can make on hubpages. A lot of talk. And arguments as to the best way to make money with hubpages.
A lot of people do make money with hubpages. I do. One of the reasons I write at hubpages is to make money. I make $300 - 500 a month from hubpages. I don’t know where you live, but five hundred dollars doesn’t go very far where I live. At best, it is pocket money. The great thing is, even though I have just about stopped writing hubs (I will get to that in a moment), I am still making that money. I guess it will drop off eventually as some of the hubs I have written will go out of date.
I am sure there are even a few people who make a living with their hubs. I don’t know how many hubs and how good an internet marketer you need to be to do this, but better than me I would think. One of my favorite hubbers, the new moderator, Maddie Ruud makes about $1,000 a month from adsense. Don’t get me wrong, this is good pocket money, but with gas at $4 a gallon, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that $1,000 is not much money. 250 gallons of fuel actually.
But this brings me to the reason for writing this hub. One of my main reasons for wanting to write at hubpages.
To use hubpages as an online resume
I don’t care what all the internet marketers tell you about submitting your hubs to search engines or using pinging services to get your hubs indexed quicker or whatever they suggest. This is all rubbish. Hubpages get crawled by the search engines on a very regular basis. I don’t know exactly how often, but I would be very surprised if you wrote a hub on Monday and it hadn’t been crawled and indexed by Tuesday.
Not only that, hubpages has very high authority with the search engines. Google in particular, but Yahoo and all the others follow very quickly. So if you want to get your writing out there, hubpages is a great venue to do this. Your work will be visble to the search engines in a matter of hours. Whether it gets any traffic is another question, but there is no doubt in my mind that this is a good starting point.
Which is what I have been doing. I no longer write hubs because I have been offered a job. A writing job. A real job no less. And, at least in part, I was offered this job because my employers read some of the articles I wrote here at hubpages. This one in particular:
I know I came in for a lot of stick from some of the internet marketers when I wrote this hub – because it goes against the grain of what many of them believe and do. But, I am a writer, not an internet marketer – I want to spend my time writing, not “submitting my work to social networking sites.”
Everything I wrote in that hub is true. I did my research and wrote the hub to the best of my writing abilities. And it is popular and gets a lot of search engine traffic. So, nya nya ne nya nya to all the nay-sayers.
That is not to say I do no promotion at all, but most of my energy is devoted to researching and writing.
Other users at hubpages
There are a lot of writers at hubpages. There are also a lot of people who create photo galleries. After the recent arguments about getting rid of these people where some members here tried to either have these galleries banned or moved to another section of the site, I have this to say to those people, “Your Mother was a Hamster and your father smelled of Elderberries. I fart in your general direction!” (Classic Monty Python)
There seems to be two arguments against them, neither of which are acceptable as far as I am concerned.
They interfere with the serious writer’s exposure. Some people have even written hubs complaining about this. This is garbage. Over 90% of my hubpage traffic comes from search engines, directly to the page in question. These galleries in no way affect that. On top of that, these galleries are good for hubpages as a whole. If you people do not understand the value of massive amounts of incoming links and traffic to the site as a whole, you should think about this: Every time some one links to one of these sites and sends a large amount of traffic, google’s ‘bot follows along and follows all the links on that page to the hot hubs page, to the best hubs page, to all the pages – including yours!
They are sinful. LOL And I mean that. I am laughing out loud at the religious, holier-than-thou, nipples-are-the-work-of-the-devil people. Parochial is the word that comes to mind. Look it up.
Getting Noticed as a Writer
As a writer, one of the most difficult things, especially when you are starting out is to get people to take notice of your writing. Which is why there are all sorts of blogs, marketing companies, etc, etc offering what I consider to be slave wages. If any one offers you a job as being a “great way to build an online resume,” because they have no traffic and cannot afford to pay you yet….
Tell them to piss off, come to hubpages, write some hubs, take the 60% adsense income and build your own online resume. When applying for jobs, add a link to the articles you have written here.
Spelling and Grammar
I also see a lot of discussions to whether or not you should be careful in your English usage. Should you make sure your spelling and grammar are correct?
Damn right you should. Any prospective employer, whether you have sent them a link or not, is going to make a decision to employ you or not based on your ability to use the English language. I am very careful with my spelling, grammar and writing style. I like to think I have my own particular style, but there is only one way to spell misspelled. No doubt I have made the occasional mistake and if any one wants to go through my hubs and point them out – feel free.
Mark Knowles on the Internet
Good bye Hubpages
So it is time to say goodbye to hubpages. I have no doubt I will still be around to argue with a few people on the forums. (You know the ones I like to argue with,) but it will no longer be one of my main venues.
I am very appreciative of the time and effort the hubpages’ staff put into running the site and want to personally thank Paul Deeds, Jason Menayan, Maddie Ruud, and Paul Edmondson for making hubpages one of the best sites on the ‘net as far as I am concerned.
The job I have been offered, and accepted is writing and maintaining this Luxury Real Estate blog. My title there is “executive blogger,” which is unusual to say the least. I am not only writing the content, but will be employing a variety of other people to write on subjects I cannot cover myself.
I can still be reached through my hubpages profile, but I do hang out on other places on the internet and there are some links to my hangouts on the right here.
So, as I often say to the spammers who are shortly to find themselves deleted.
So long and thanks for all the fish. Ciao !

You said point 'em out! Your first paragraph in this post has two sentence fragments and there are occasional fragments here and there! Good luck in your new blogging venture.
Thanks - I appreciate the comment.
Ah! Mark! You are just incredible.(I am associating this with your quitting forums eons ago :) ) I wish you all the best on your future ventures. We will miss you, really.
I prefer the word 'Au Revoir' to goodbyes.
Warm Regards
Congrats, Mark, on the new position. Be sure to drop in with your dingleberry lines, okay?

I will of course haunt the forums Lissie. Executive blogger - check out the company I work for and see :)
funride- I am saving that one :)
Thanks to everyone for the well-wishing .
So sad to see you go, Mark. Yours are among my favorite hubs. You were also the first to comment on one of my hubs (That was very encouraging). Best of luck!
Thanks rmr - I will still be around - just nowhere near as much :)
Hmm... just read my first Hub written by you and it turns out to be your last. Still, it was poignant and very relevant for a newbie. Thanks. And good luck.
Thanks story teller - all the others are still there though :)
Mark, good luck!
I enjoyed reading your hubs, especially the recipe ones :)
I will be trying out the ribs this weekend and will write a hub about the results dedicated to you.
Thanks - I hope the ribs work well, but if they don't, I offer a full refund :)
i will miss reading your articlesand i wish you all the best
Mark, Thank you for your excellent point of view regarding the photo hubbers and how they are beneficial to the site; you are correct. Thank you also for helping me make up my mind about continuing with Hubpages. I haven't made ANYTHING yet but I guess patience, time and a million hubs will get me something at some point in the future. I wish you well and I am sorry I didn't get to know you better. You are a wonderful writer. Cheryl Anne
Mark, thanks for all the great hubs and the amazing advice you've written. You are definitely a model hubber and it's too bad we have to lose you--but what better way to go than executive blogging!
xAC
CherylAnne - Stick with it. If you write good content - you will be successful.
AC - Thanks. My feelings exactly :)
I am pleased that you have a new title and position. I feel that you will be missed immensely.
Thank you for your help and advice and your passion
May you march into your new future with honour.
Frank
Good Riddance You Old Fart.
I hope you're going to give those people I sent you a good severance package, or at least send them off on lots of field trips to check out luxury properties.
In fact, I might apply for that job.
Cheers,
Eric G.
Luxury properties? Best of luck and may you find whatever level of prosperity you seek.
I can't remember if I've commented on one of your hubs before, but I'm a fan, and I hope you'll come out or hub-retirement now and then. Best of luck!
Well, it will be nice to see you when you can take a moment from your hectic and important lifestyle of Executive Blogging and descend to join we mere mortals in the forums. Your wit and intelligence have brought me a lot of pleasure since I joined HubPages. Congratulations, and I hope you negotiated a traffic-based incentive package!
Mark! The very best of luck to you in your new job. I would like to say thank you again for all the help you've given me in the past. I'm not sure that hubpages will be the same without your witty and sar... comments that I have enjoyed one and all. I'm getting closer and closer to my goal thanks to your suggestion and guidance.
Merci mon ami et bon chance Suzanne
Mark, best of luck to you with your new job. I'm sorry to see you go. Say hi to me in the forums sometime! Later. :(
ProCW
Congratulations, Mark!
Change is good, paper is better! Hope you enjoy your new blogging job. You are a talented writer, and I'll miss your information-packed hubs. All the best.
Thank you all -
I will of course still do the occasional hub and still be around to argue my favorite arguments.
I appreciate the comments from all of you - except Eric who still appears miffed that I pinched his best people :)
All the best :) (who is going to post my fav. Jeremy Irons photos now???)
..., but with gas at $4 a gallon,...
in Europe average cost is more than $8 ...
Best wishes, when your come back would be expected.
Sad to see you go but good that you have found a great job.
Thanks topstuff and Rudra.
Princessa- I will still be able to do that occasionally lol
Mark, you decieved me with the title of this hub- I'm not interested in using hubpages as an online resume, but I AM interested in saying goodbye to a hubber I've considered a friend.
I suspect the forums to which you referred were religion-related...
If so, I'm still waiting for you to show me how the world population isn't gargantuan according to the evolutionary model...
http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/4746
But not to worry, I can wait, even upwards of 400 years.
Regardless, you're on to bigger and better things and we should have all expected this to happen knowing what we know about you!
I'll echo what these many people have said- you'll be missed. Glad to hear that you're on to a higher paying job, although I think VP would have been more $, but I could be wrong about that.
"Best of luck to you!"
WC - Don't you worry. I will be over to explain about evolution and animal (human) populations growths lol
haha good- it wouldn't be the same without you there!
do hop on my hubs to leave a comment once in a blue moon.
I understand. Wish you the Best!
I have learned a lot from you. Sad to see you go!
Many thanks ... your Hub came along just as I began to consider possibilities beyond ad clicks.
Will miss your Hubs. Best of success to you in all you do!
Thanks Marian and dumbledore.
M - it makes sense to leverage hubpages authority to get your writing noticed. :)
Mark, Good luck in your new job. Hope to see you around here from time to time. Best, Paul
Thanks Paul. I appreciate you stopping by. :)
I find it curious that funride said, "everything must come to an end" and not, "every GOOD thing must come to an end." Is there any significance in that seemingly innocent omission?
And don't worry about the religion forum staying alive. I'll save your spot! Unless mo steals it from both of us...
lol - I don't find it curious. funride has a very English ability called taking the piss, :)
As for Mo, well... the sooner he realises that his current hubber score is making sure none of his outgoing links are tagged dofollow and therefore worthless, the better LOL
Hi Mark,I have not been here on HubPages for long, but, in the short time I have been I have read several of your hubs and enjoyed your writing style greatly. Though I disagree with you on some of your views I respect you for them and the way you present them. Good luck with your new ventures. I'll miss your musings here on HubPages. ~Jeff C.
Well, you may be leaving for the most part, but you're leaving behind a legacy of great help for those of us just getting started in this part of the writing universe. Thanks and I hope you make more money than god at your new job.
Congrats on your new job! Wish you great success there.
Im almost sad after reading this hub. I dont know what all these people above me are talking about. I wouldn't know what it is like to have you in the forums and the discussions here on hubpages. Sure hope to see you around.
Regards,
Rookie
Thanks - Although the forums almost never get deleted. :)
I enjoyed reading your work and comments. You'll be missed brother.
Oh my gosh. I'm sad now!!!
PLM - Thanks.
gamergirl - Don't be sad, I will still be around on the forums. Just hard to find time to be certain of posting hubs regularly.
Wow, what a surprise when I read in the forums about your leaving. I didn't realize until I read this what that meant.
Very best of luck, Mark. I'm sure you'll blow them away with your talent.
Didn't know you had left, until I read about it in a forum as Shirley did. I will miss your humor and presence, but congratulations on your new job!
Thank you both. I will stiill be around, but not producing hubs on a regular basis.
Good luck Mark in your new writing position, you will be missed here at the hub, It has been a pleasure working with you here, I hope you will write a new hub from time to time and keep us guys up to date. take care.....jimmy
Thanks Jimmy. Likewise. I will still be doing the odd one, but I have a lot on my plate at the moment and wanted to let everyone know why I was not making regular hubs any more.
Congratulations on your new job, Mark. Like everyone else, I'll miss your pithy comments in the forums and your well reasoned opinions. Your contributions to HubPages is immeasurable. See you around cyberspace.
Dear Mark, you do realise that the countless prayers of Christians and Health Food Advocates alike have been answered with your sudden departure, don't you? (LOL!!!) But I dare say this because I am convinced that you are a good man with a grand sense of humour.
No system of governance, at any level, can ever be a good one without criticism. In retrospect, your abhorrence of Christianity is evidence of our failure as Christians to share the love of God without imposing our beliefs on others. For this, I do humbly apologize.
I will miss you, Mark. May you be blessed in your new job.
P\S Do remember to come back and keep us in check. It is a thankless job, but someone's got to do it. Be well, my friend.
LOL
True, too true. Although you have no need to apologize for Christianity's failings.
Thanks for the compliment, I apprecieate it.
Mark,
Whenever you write, excellent!!!
Jyoti kothari
You are the greatest, man. To know you is to love you and I think this comment section will continue to grow. So Long, and thanks for all the fish you crazy dolphin!
Thanks Dj - There are a "few" who might disagree though lol
Oh those few. They can suck an egg. Buncha wussies. When I came and started spamming the forums you and Misha put me in my place in a way I appreciated. Although it doesn't stop me from spamming the forums. :P
Now I just do it a bit more creatively.
I think it's a great hub Mark.
Very good hub. Hope to see you around.
Hi Mark, this is quite interesting. Is there a way to favorite individual hubs . . . I guess bookmark. I want to go back and read yours. Making $ 300 to $ 1,000 a month off hubpages is quite good, I believe even if it's pocket money. It's a serious additional part-time job for that matter. But you're right. It really can show off one's knowledge of a particular subject or subjects.
Mark, never say good bye! It pains...
Please do not go...
I am still learning the inner workings or possibilities with Hubpages however I do see massive potential and I like how easy they are to use. i think what my fave it that hub is full of people willing to help others learn how to use HUB to their fullest advange. Now that is a community, I like being part of .TY for the hub :)
I enjoyed your reality Bites Mark which made me lol and think about some things alot more, and if anyone knows more about hubpages than the above staff mentioned, its you and I always value your comments and advice you give helping others!
This is truly an excellent article. This is precisely what I have been trying to do, using hubpages as an online resume. I have never articulated this as well as you have, but every word you have written is true (in my meager experience). Great hub. But, I don't believe you will stay away for very long...
THANKS nice informative blog!.. this is why you're getting paid!
how long did it take you to get to at least $100 in a month from hubpages?
You Go Troll! Good Luck and keep at it on the forums here. That is a job you fill well and may not get paid for but somebody has to keep the BS in check! Best Wishes to you. C.S. Alexis
It is through hubpages that I have been able to hear of Luxury Real Estate blog. Go well Mark, and I wish you all the best.
I must add that you have been an intelligent, straight forward and a sincere hubber. I hope many of us will be able to emulate you.
Hopefully, we shall be meeting at Luxury Real Estate and elsewhere on the net.
I still remember your comment on my hub wishing me enlightening journeys. It brings a smile to my face knowing you are embarking on one too! I know you enjoy the trip...you have the heart and wisdom to do so. :) Keep on.
Thank you all. I appreciate the encouragement :)
Very nice hub and inspiring too.
It has shown a different angle.
Jyoti kothari
Mark, Congratulations and thank you for being a part of hubpages as not only do you enlighten, you also encourage.
very good hub keep making more money
Hi Mark, Congratulations. When you get some time back ( settled in and staff organized etc) I feel sure you will continue to annoy the god-botherers sometimes.I'm counting on it.
Thank you for your consistant "How to" hubs. You have helped me and I believe very many others new to hubpages get started here.
I will continue to read and re-read your hubs until I get a handle on writing more and better stuff that people want to read.
Thanks. Glad to be of service. Bothering the god botherers is one of my favorite hobbies :)
Well Mark, I was told to look at your hubs to get a better understanding of how this Hubpages and Adsense works. So I read two so far, this one and the one on Mac and Cheese. I am sending you a private e-mail.
Glad it all works out for you! Seems that you've got some great things going.
Very informative hub and indeed very helpful. I hope it works for me too. I hope you are enjoying your new job. :)
Hi Mark,
Or should I say "bye" Mark. You were the first person I became a fan of so I am really sorry that you will not be publishing here any more. I have really enjoyed your writing, so I hope one day you might just decide you can't do without hub pages and come back again :>)
My best wishes for a successful career as an executive blogger! Good luck.
Cheers
Derek
"Your Mother was a Hamster and your father smelled of Elderberries. I fart in your general direction!"
Niiiiiiice. ;D Funny, he didn't look Druish. =D
Thanks for this well thought out diatribe. Here's some more fish!
Also, not to tout myself, but I'm down with the grammar thing. I like to play with it, though. For example: http://hubpages.com/hub/hubmobhealthycomedy
Hope I can make you smile. =)

P.S.
"Parochial is the word that comes to mind. Look it up."
I would've said Poppycock. ;D
HubPages has done wonders for my writer's self esteem. I'm writing more now since I've an audience!
lol
Thanks for the comment - glad you enjoyed. :)
Fantastic article.I have been a freelance writer for over a year now and have enough projects to keep me gainfully employed (mostly :) ) but of late I have seen that I need to have an online profile as a writer, which Hubpages provides. Admirably. The forum is a plus and it is very flattering to have 'fans'. :)
But um there are actually two ways to spell misspelled: misspelt is also correct, though my Firefox browser frowns on 'learnt' and 'spelt'. It is probably the British and American spelling dichotomy?
I hope you will come back for fulltime writing here.

And just as we were getting started on debating the merits of babelfish... ;-)
Good luck with your blogging venture, Mark -I'm sure we'll see each other around regularly.
Oh, and great parting Hub, by the way! :)
