Using More Than One Tool To Find Backlinks
71Relying on just one tool to find backlinks to your hubs or websites is a waste of precious resources. Some people say they only use the Yahoo Site Explore because it provides useful information about inlinks, but keep in mind this is only one tool. Personally I prefer backlinkwatch.com because it allows you to see embedded links to your hub that are follow and no-follow. Last year I did a web search to find a backlink checker that would provide useful data, and iwebtool.com was the first one I found. Although I love the information provided by iwebtool.com, it is limited because it only allows to conduct five searches per hour. Backlinkwatch.com allows for unlimited resources, so this has been my go to for checking hyperlinks. However, I use several websites to check for links because no one website can provide all the information. This would be similar to only looking at one of the credit reports from one of the three major US reporting agencies, which means you could be missing some important data. For example, there is a possibility TransUnion will not always report the same data as Experian. The same is true for hyperlink checkers when it comes to finding who is linking to your site. To get a complete picture I believe we should use all of the resources at our disposal, which will give us an idea about how to build stronger and better backlinks.
Yahoo Site Explorer: Pros and Cons
Yahoo Site Explorer does a good job of telling us which hubs are linking other hubshub. For instance if I write a hub about blankets Yahoo Site Explorer will tell me related hubs where mine is listed. The Yahoo Tool also does a superb job of showing what categories consider my hub about blankets to be a hot or best topic.
However, one major drawback of the Yahoo Site Explorer is that it does not tell me how many sites outside of Hubpages are linking to my hub. For this crucial piece of information I will have to rely on other tools. No one tool will tell all, but using a variety of tools gives a more complete picture of which sites are referring to your hubs.
Iwebtool.com: Pros And Cons
Iwebtool.com is a great site because not only does it allow you to check how many sites are linking to yours, but it gives other crucial pieces of information such as Google Page Rank Prediction, Multi-Rank Checker, and my favorite Backlink Checker. The iwetbool even allows you to check IP addresses and many other features I would not have even dreamed of before visiting this site.
One of the major drawbacks of the iwebtool is it only allows five lookups per hour, which means you better spread this out. Personally I think five it quite a bit, but what happens if you want to look up more pages than this? However, do not gloss over iwebtool because it chalked full of information that will teach you more about your hubs and websites.
Backlinkwatch.com: Pros And Cons
The best feature of Backlinkwatch.com is that is allows you to look up as many pages as you like. It can get pretty addicting and it is fun to see the different ways websites are linking back to you. Also, backlinkwatch shows whether is a link is follow or no-follow, which will tell you whether you want to post your links to this site. Personally I prefer to write wordpress blogs, Windows Live, and my own website posts about my hubs, so do not go posting your links to websites willy nilly.
Create your own websites and blogs where you can share backlinks to your hubs, or share these on websites in an acceptable manner. Another good idea is to have a friend blog about your hubs and to do the same thing in kind. I often blog about hubbers I enjoy reading, so just keep in mind how this good deed will reward you many times over. However, be genuine and only blog about hubbers you know and truly enjoy. Also, do not send out mass emails asking people you barely know to blog about you because this seems a little greedy. I have had people asking me to blog about them or help them that I barely know, and I find this disconcerting because they have not even taken the time to talk to me first.
One of the drawbacks of backlinkwatch.com is that you often have to reload the page for it to work correctly. Also, it often loads slowly even on a high speed connection, so you better be patient if you are going to this site on a dial-up modem. Overall this is my favorite site and my go to choice for learning about who is linking to me, or if my blog posts are registering with backlinks.
Google Analytics: Pros And Cons
I love Google Analytics and it can teach you a great deal about the traffic coming to your hubs and websites. For example if you go under the traffic sources tab you can see find the subcategory that will show you how many websites are referring to your hubs. Google Analytics even allows you to search within a specific date range to see which sites are linking to you. Other features I love about Google Analytics is how you can see the key word searches that are leading to your hubs, which is very useful. I have never done a drop of SEO research, but I have done well with writing online because I look at my Google Analytics. On a montly basis I look to see which key word phrases bring people to my hubs and how people think when they are typing these into the search portal.
One of the drawback of Google Analytics is that you actually have to dig around it to learn how it works. By clicking on the content overview allows you to see how many people are actually visiting each hub. If you click on the entrance sources you can see where they are coming from to get to this particular page. Also, clicking on the entrance keywords allows you to see which phrases are bringing people to your sites. I am the type of person that never actually started reading manuals for computers or cameras until a few years ago, so my modus operi is to dig around and dig some more.
Do not let Google Analytics scare you because it provides some interesting information about where traffic come from on the Internet. My favorite feature of Analytics is the map overlay that shows which countries and cities people are coming from. Okay, I am a geography buff and I like to look at maps, so maybe I get more of a kick out of this tool than some. Today I noticed the city that was searching for my hubs the most was London, which tend to be the case for me most of the time. Today London was followed by Birmingham, New York, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, and Sydney. Glossing over Google Analytics means that you could miss out on some interesting information, so make it your pal! All of these tools can be your friends for different purposes when it comes to researching how people are finding your hubs.

Thanks sirdent. I want to add more information eventually, but I had a headache and needed to type something. For some reason writing helps to make me feel better.
The Iweb link isn't working right for me. You may want to check it and make sure it is the right link.
It just worked for me. If it does not work you can always type iwebtool.com into the url. I wonder why it is not working :(.
SweetiePie thanks for that great information. I try to use Google Analytics but it is often very slow to open and use.
I just tried to access iwebtool and they are saying they have a system malfunction, so I will try again later.
agvulpes,
Do you have a dial-up, DSL, or cable modem? Analytics may be opening slowly if you do not have a high speed modem. I recommend trying backlinkwatch.com, my favorite, iwebtool.com is down right now.
SweetPie, I am on DSL but apparently I am at the end of the line quite a way from the exchange and my bandwidth degrades when the line is under heavy load. Oh well.
I have just now tried backlinkwatch.com and it worked ok. I took the liberty of running your profile url to see. I did not particularly like the look of some of the backlinks is there anything you can do to have them removed if you so desire?
agvulpes,
Honestly I really am not worried about who is linking to me because it is traffic. However, if you want someone to unlink to you then email them and ask them to stop I suppose.
I have had so many problems with Internet the last month. My cable modem and cable phone service stopped working, so I went back to DSL.
Hey SweetiePie -- this is all great information, thanks. I'm new to all this backlink stuff, so your hub will be particularly helpful -- I'm going to do some exploring and, like you, see what I dig up from the sites you have suggested. Thanks!
SweetiePie, Great share for those of us who are Internet numskulls! TY
Thanks, SweetiePie, this is very useful information!
fantastic hub - as always, from you! Full of useful info, thanks.
I'm just beginning to learn about backlinks, SweetiePie, so this hub will be very helpful to me. I'll be doing some exploring and digging around as well. Thanks.
Okay...THIS is really a useful Hub!
Thank you!
Concisely written piece you got here. I've heard about the backlinks checker tool you've covered here. Also, the pros and cons format makes the info easy to digest. Any thoughts on getting more people to link to one's blog? I imagine such a strategy would get one a lot of traffic, other than optimising for select keywords. I'm into online marketing and I'm always open to new ideas.
Good stuff. I suppose if one is into affiliate marketing, for example, then one should worry a bit about who's linking to you, and if they've taken down their links to you. A niche blog that forwards traffic to your site might well be a sale. So tracking who links to who is important. The tools you suggested are spot on for the job.
GA is great so far and Yahoo site explorer works for me. I personally like backlink watch b/c it shows the anchor text
Teresa,
I like checking out of of the back link tools because each give different information. I hope you have fun exploring.
C.S. Alexis,
I just have way too much playing around with the Internet. I really hope you have fun exploring some of these links.
kerryg,
Glad you enjoyed this hub.
LondonGirl,
I really appreciate that you find my hubs informative. I also enjoy the research that you put into your hubs.
William,
Google Analytics is a great one to dig around when you are first starting, but the others are good too.
saberblade,
Glad you enjoyed it.
Robert,
Like I said as to getting people to link to your blog I prefer to have friends do that and not be pushing about it. I will caution those who are into heavy duty online marketing to really watch who they are pushing their products on.
onlinemarketingsc,
I also want to caution you about affiliate programs and who you are marketing these towards. If someone has an online business where they sell jewelry, computer equipment, or something someone needs that is one thing, but honestly there is just way too much affiliate marketing out there. Try some more subtle ways of doing this, such as including ebay capsules in informative hubs on the subject. Do we really need all the affiliate products people are selling? I would say not unless it is something really specific or something people can use. This is just my opinion though, and to each his own.
You know, I've been wondering about this topic for a long time. I assumed at some point I would figure it out. I do love Google Analytics. I love using it. So I suppose, bonus for me. I'll have to check out the others as well. Thanks for the useful info.
Hi Frieda,
If you go to the parts of Google I suggested it is easy to dig around and interpret the data.
Hi SweetiePie, Just went to iwebtool.com and they apparently had a crash and lost all their data. Thought you may want to know about that.
It is easy once you get used to it. Your directions are very good ones.
Frieda,
Thanks for letting me know. I read their statement on the website and they said they are trying to restore everything asap.
Google's webmaster tools (free) will always give you the definitive list of backlinks that Google is counting for your site - they always count less than Yahoo does - but hopefully they will eventually count the yahoo ones (though it can take months and months). The other tools I suspect are using Yahoo's data with an easier interface.
The important thing with backlinks is what your anchor is - if its your name - that's what the search engines will rank you for - not that useful unless you happen to be called Britney spears! The rest of us prefer to anchor with the main keywords associated with the hub or website.
Nice hub
Great hub SweetiePie. You mention that it isn't possible to find out the number of pages which are linking in to a particular hub from outside hubpages. However, couldn't this be done by selecting the 'except from this domain' as this will then provide all inlinks except those from hubpages? Apologies if I have completely misunderstood what you meant in your hub though!
Lissie,
I agree with you about the importance of backlink anchor text, which is something I use quite often. If anyone has a Windows Live Space I have happily discovered these are also counted as a backlink, and there and on my Wordpress blog I have used key word anchor text.
Bristol Boy,
I think what you are referring to is how I said one should not rely on just one backlink tool because each provides different information. Every backlink tool I have checked has provided insights that the other one may not catch. I have even done random backlink checks on the same webpage through out the week and sometimes get slightly different results.
SweetiePie, I am also new to hubpages and backlinks and am so grateful to have found your information. I will be referring back to this often. Thanks so much for all the pro and con info.
I knew about google analytics and yahoo site explorer to some extent, this hub is really helpful about finding backlinks with well written about other tools/sites included.
Thumbs up!
Your comment about Analytics is a good one. I have found referall traffic that came from sources like swicki that I had no clue were linked to my hubs, and the backlink tools weren't reporting them. Even though they were nofollowed, they were giving me traffic, which in the end is what this is all about.
Good information, I think I'll have to revisit to learn more. Presently I am not serious about backlinks, occassionaly I use Analytics and Good Keywords site popularity checker.
I love your new avatar Sweety Pie.Great hub to go with it. :)
weblog,
I am glad you were able to learn about some new backlink tools.
john,
I do like the detailed analysis offered by analytics.
blondepoet,
Thanks for the compliment.
Hi SweetiePie, this was very helpful to me...thank you!!!
Question, On the Yahoo Search tools page, I need some help filling out the API, I'll email you my question, k? tnx
Hi Marisue,
I will look in my email to see your question. Thanks for reading.
Hello - this is just the type of info I was looking for. It's about time I analysed traffic to my hubs and blogs more if I want to maximise their potential; It all sounds a bit boring but necessary - so this hub has made it a lot easier for me.
Iphigenia,
I am glad you enjoyed this.
google analytics is a great tool, it helps when you are writing on a variety of topics and you want to narrow down the ones that are getting the most interest, I will have to check out some of the other sites you mentioned. Thanks
Hi Research Analyst,
As you say analytics is perfect for researching topic that are popular to write about.
