What is a Utility Post?

Utility posts, or what some bloggers call "Speed Linking," are simply posts that point to great resources in your topic range.

Bloggers do utility posting on days that they are too busy to write a completely original article, or when they have found a group of great posts by other bloggers to point to that their readers will get a lot out of.

Utility post usually start around a keyword that you want to optimize, or a topic that you haven't written about in awhile. You want to include 1-2 paragraphs of introduction (original content) and then point to the sites that you feel have the best, most relevant, and recent information on that topic.

It's not just fast, it's good content!

You don't always have a Pulitzer Prize-winning idea for a blog post. In cases of writers' block, use Utility Posts to keep your blog active and your readers engaged.

Backlinks

Linking to other bloggers will often get you a backlink. If you use Wordpress 2.5+ the program will attempt to notify the people you are linking to and you can gain a "trackback" where your post title is the link back to your post you linked to them with.

This is a good idea - I write a few blogs and I can get stuck sometimes not wanting to write the same thing over and over.

Now I can do the occasional "utility post" and maybe even link to those things I wrote on the subject somewhere else.

Methinks I'll try one of those utility posts tomorrow ;)
