VOIP is a technology which is relatively new and which used to be unharnessed some years back, but now has found quite a large fan following. All the developed nations have already switched to this technology with the developing nations quickly adapting to it. And the competition is stiff amongst the existing players. The technology being implemented for the system is as follows. Data is assimilated in the form of small packets and transferred through the existing PSTN lines to another terminal with internet facility. Call conferencing is one of the major additions of VOIP services.

Some of the advantages of VOIP services are discussed in the coming sections. No additional changes to the existing infrastructure are required. Most of the VOIP systems are plug-and-play. It is estimated that a savings of approximately 40% is gained by using VOIP services. Another feature worth mentioning is the encryption being employed. Calls are encrypted and decrypted on the fly by the system, hence there is lesser chance of call snooping by others. Response systems which are automated and routing are some of the extra features of the VOIP. VOIP enabled phones are the talk of the day with many vendors releasing devices which can used on the existing telephone/internet network.

One of the popular softwares which are being employed for the purpose is Skype. Vonage is the other service which distributes gadgets which facilitate VOIP services. These services make sure that the latest of the technology advancements in the field of VOIP is being incorporated in their services. Besides another factor which has lead to the reduction in the rates is the cut throat competition. VOIP services are generated on the day basis and it is essential to stick to a service which ensures transparency and which is lighter on the pockets at the same time.

I've been using skype for a while. It's pretty good. I remember about 10 years ago there were some free programs on the the internet. You could make long distance calls on your computer for free. Ahhh the dot com era.... so fun.

Skype is so cheap - I've used it for almost a year right here on my computer - easy and the price is the same every month. A fraction of what I'd pay for phone service. I no longer use a land line.

Thanks for all the links which I'll check out - and forward this hub!

An additional use of VOIP is Tmobiles unlimited calls that you make on your cell phone using your router and broadband, For $10 a month you can make unlimited calls. This can replace your home phone.

I use VOIP here in the South of France, gives me unlimited calls to the UK for a monthly fee and some free hours to other countries as well. Very reasonably priced and pretty reliable as well. I think as you have suggested that this system will replace the older standard telephone systems in time.
