Learn everything you need to know about vacuum bags, such as the different types and brands available, vacuum filtration, and buyer's advice.

Vacuum bags are still a day-to-day part of people's home life, and simply by keeping your home or workplace clean you will eventually come across the need to replace them. This extensive guide will tell you all you need to know about bags for your vacuum cleaner, from the different types of bag available, and special filtration features, to bagless vacuums and the difficulty of tracking down bags that are specific to only one model of vacuum cleaner.

General Brand Bags. Since most vacuums models usually require a similar type of bag, you can always look for generalised bags on the market. These can usually be found in large supermarkets or convenience stores at a pretty low price, and you can often buy them in bulk at a cheaper cost. The upside of having a vacuum that works with generalised bags is that you will not have to spend time tracking down a specific type or size of bag, as is the case with some models (see below).

Brand-specific Bags. The tricky thing about purchasing replacement bags for your vacuum cleaner is that sometimes they are brand specific – meaning that if you have, for example, a Bosch brand vacuum cleaner, you will need to find a retailer that sells Bosh brand vacuum bags, for the same model. Many vacuum manufacturers are aware how awkward this can be for their customers, so they design their vacuum cleaner specifically so they are compatible with one size of bag. Before you buy a vacuum it is worth checking how easy it will be to find replacement bags.

Filters (Dyson). Nowadays not every vacuum cleaner actually uses bags – a popular example of a vacuum that does not use bags is the Dyson range. Dysons are generally considered as quality, feature rich vacuum cleaners, and every so often their filters need replacement. Dyson filters are not hard to track down online or in the High Street. New packs of vacuum filters are generally quite inexpensive, with an 8-pack of long lasting filters costing an average of around $10-20 or pounds. In reality Dyson filters need to be replaced less often than bag vacuums.

Special Filtration. Another popular feature commonly catered for by manufacturers of vacuum bags, is built in special filtration. Filtration basically refers to the amount of dust and dirt that will leave the bag and remain in the air. This feature was originally marketed aimed at people who need quality, clean air for medical reasons, such as sufferers of allergies and people with asthma. For these people having clean air is a matter of comfort and life quality. Most manufacturers will always claim there is some level of filtration in their bags, but if you are in the above category you should always check for a genuinely strong level of filtration in your vacuum bags.
