Whether you need to store bedding, meats, vegetables or fruits, one of the best method of storage is the use of vacuum bags. Vacuum bags keep items fresh, no matter what those items are. Bedding will be as fresh as the day you removed it from the dryer and those fruits, veggies and meats will avoid all freezer burn. Everything will be at its best as it has been freshly stored in a vacuum bag.
Up until the 1980s, vacuum
packaging was reserved for commercial products such as lunch meats and
hotdogs. During the 1980s home vacuum sealing became a possibility
with heat seal bags that used a small vacuum hose to remove the air
from the bags and was removed just prior to final sealing. Now
vacuum bags have a self-sealing mechanism that allows you to pack without
using a heat seal device. Some are very large allowing for packing
of clothing and linens in a very small space. The smaller bags
using this technology are approved for food use and help to save space
and keep food fresh in your freezer.
No matter what is being stored
in the bags, they work in a like manner. The bag is filled, sealed
and air is removed. Sealing is a simple matter with a just as
with any zipper plastic bag. For food storage, the manufacturer
offers a hand held vacuum pump to remove the air. For the larger
storage bags, you use your home vacuum cleaner to remove the air from
the package. You will find the food storage bags with other food
storage bags, plastic wraps and foils on the grocer’s shelves.
Clothing storage bags are in the house wares department of many variety
stores.
After vacuum packaging your
linens remember that you have only removed air and not weight from the
vacuum bags. Do not over pack the bags or you may be unable to
move them. Be careful not to exceed the weight limit of shelves
when replacing the items into the linen closet. You may want to
use these bags to form a base and then place other lightweight items
on top of the bags.
Perhaps you remember the infomercials
showing luggage being packed using these storage bags. Be careful
in doing this with the new weight limits being imposed by airlines.
You may be charged an overweight fee. Also remember that in hotels
you are unlikely to have access to a vacuum for repacking those bags
to bring home.
If you shop at warehouse stores,
you are aware of the savings available in purchasing foods in bulk.
The problem is that when those large bags of food are opened, the contents
are subject to freezer burn. Throwing food away is not saving
money. Try this. Open one of the giant freezer bags as soon
as you return home from the store, divide into portion sizes that are
appropriate for your family and store in vacuum food storage bags.
Food will remain fresher than if you had left it in its original packaging.
Be sure to label the bags with
date and contents. Rotate packages in order to use food that has
been stored the longest first. This will also keep you from storing
food over the recommenced six months.
The food storage bags that
come with a hand sealer can be reused if washed in very hot water using
a dish soap that is also antibacterial. The seals can stand
up to the heat of the water. This also provides another money
savings to the consumer.
With summer just around the
corner, here is a tip for marinating those meats for the grill.
Just add the meet and marinate to a vacuum bag seal and remove the air.
The process of marinating will take only 20 minutes as the marinate
is forced through the meats. In the winter, those bags will also
serve as a boil-in bag for quick cooking.
If you still prefer the heat
and seal vacuum bags, you can find them at hardware, department and
warehouse stores. Many hunters prefer these type sealers for storing
game. They are also very useful in the shop, as bags can be sized
to fit small nuts, bolts and washers to keep them from being scattered.
These bags resist rips and tears so they are great for this use.
To save money and time, use vacuum bags. They are great for food, linens, clothing and much more. Just be sure to purchase the correct bag for the items that you plan to store. Whatever you put into a vacuum storage bag will be protected and easier to store. You will find less waste of food and less waste of space in the closets. Pick up some vacuum bags today.
