Valentine's Day - Perfumes versus Essential Oils
67BY DEFINITION a perfume must always smell exactly the same therefore they are made up, in a lab, of a synthetic chemical soup, so it can always be exactly the same.
THE PERFUME INDUSTRY essential oil quality has a high concern for price and no concern for therapeutic value. They spray fields with pesticides and insecticides. They harvest plants when it is convenient for the industry. After cutting the plants they can lay around for days before they are distilled. And, they distill them using high temperatures, high pressure, with added chemicals to increase the output and which makes cleaning the equipment easier. Synthetic ingredients are added to increase volume and to achieve the desired smell. Perfumes are a very craftily combined set of crude oil chemicals in a fancy bottle with a seductive label and a celebrity selling them. There is no concern for effects of these chemicals on one's health. 98% of essential oils produced today are used in the perfume amd cosmetic industry. Only 2% are produced for therapeutic and medicinal applications.
Samuel S. Epstein MD Professor of Environmental Medicine, Univ of Illionois School of Public Health, Chicago and Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition and Amy March, President of the Environmental Health Network, Larkspur, California wrote an article:
PERFUME: Cupid's Arrow or Poison Dart.
"The first paragraph reads; Lovers looking for the perfect Valentine's gift should think twice before giving a bottle of toxic chemicals to their sweethearts. Recent analysis of Calvin Klein's Eternity Eau de Parfum (Eternity) by an industry laboratory specializing in fragrance chemistry revealed 41 ingredients. These include some known to be toxic to the skin, respiratory tract, nervous, and reproductive systems, and others known to be carcinogens, no toxicity data are available on several ingredients, while data on most are inadequate. Additionally, some ingredients are volatile and a source of indoor air pollution."
What are husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends buying for their sweethearts for Valentine's day? Bottles of poison. And we wonder why we have health issues. These chemicals go in to the skin and build up in the body. This is true for as many men these days as woman. One day we want to have a baby, but we continue to wash and cover ourselves with perfumes and creams while we are pregnant, and these chemicals get into the blood and then travel into the placenta and we wonder why our babies are being born autistic. Think about it.
ON THE OTHER HAND true, unadulterated, medicinal, essential oils, smell slightly different from batch to batch. Like fine wine, they vary depending on the weather, soil conditions, length of season, time of harvest, geographical location, and infinite other factors nature provides.
THE AUTHORITIES OF MEDICINAL QUALITY OILS produce essential oils grown in organic, rich, fertile, soil, that are harvested at the correct time of day, (this differs for each species of plant), that are steam distilled immediately after harvesting, at the low temperature and low pressure that releases the most amount of constituents with the least amount of damage. They are never adulterated with foreign substances and are bottled with care and minimum light. These most wonderful God-given fragrances are designed by our creator with healing properties for improving one's health.
SENSE OF SMELL
Only one of our five senses is directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, the emotional control center. That is the sense of smell. Anxiety, depression, fear, anger, joy, contentment all emanate from this region.
The limbic system is directly connected to parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance.
Fragrances have profound physiological and psychological effects. More than we realize. Manufacturers give cars, childrens toys, clothes, shoes, all sorts of items different scents. Why? They know scents will allure shoppers to buy their goods.
DEPRESSION
The study below shows the power of the highest quality, (in my opinion divine even) smells. The number one cause of depression is oxygen depravation to the brain. If you increase the oxygen to the brain you will not have depression. Scientific studies conducted at the University of Vienna, Austria found that Frankincense penetrates the blood/brain barrier and in the research project they found that the group of people who were diffusing and breathing frankincense and sandalwood essential oils would increase the oxygen around the pineal gland and pituitary as much as 28%.
How many people do you know who are depressed? How many of them spray perfumes all over themselves and rub creams on their bodies and wash their hair with chemicals every day? Now you can say to them...you do not need to take Prozac,,,,just snort some frankincense and sandalwood essential oils. And stop poisoning yourself as well.
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR LOVE FOR VALENTINES DAY?
Maybe you should try wearing the essential oil blend of JOY which can attract love. But, to make sure you are very clear about who you are falling in love with, so you choose the right person, use CLARITY blend as well. LOL
I DON'T NORMALLY, IN FACT I NEVER BEFORE HAVE felt compelled to discuss the following, but because Valentine's Day represents LOVE, and there are so many toxic substances being advertised to help people with their night time activities, I thought I would throw in a few, not only non-toxic alternatives, but health giving, hormone normalizing, skin repairing, suggestions that I know work.
1. We all know what a Golden Rod is, right? Well some people have reported that when things went down, massaging golden rod essential oil into that area, sometimes for 4 or 5 times, kept the rod in good standing ......... and then it was not needed again for months after that.
2. Some woman have reported that when they wear ylang ylang essential oil their husband's bother them like a young stallion in the pasture, so only put it on when you are ready.
3. A unisex formula for men and women is essential oil blend called Sclar-essence. Both men and woman can take this orally in veggie capsules.
4. From babies bottoms to before and after giving birth to dry, itchy, scratchy sensitive areas, there is nothing better than Tendertush and/or Claraderm spray. These are miracle essential oil products, in my opinion.
5. Last but not least, a massage oil called Sensation that will heighten your sense of touch and make you feel sensational. The way we feel always corresponds to the way we perform our actions.......
ESSENTIAL OILS ARE NOT APHRODISIACS, not one in the world can be said to be. Medicinal essential oils will not cause you to do something or anything abnormal. Essential oils do not stimulate hormones, they encourage the body to produce hormones when there is a deficiency. It will only bring the hormones into balance. It will not push hormones beyond normal levels. In order to be an aphrodisiac, it would have to push them off the richter scale. It will not do it. The body will not allow that. -Gary Young

Wow I have such problems with perfumes. This is great stuff please keep us informed more. Thanks
Great hub. I had no idea perfumes were toxic chemicals. I don't have much of a sense of smell, so I have not worn perfume for years. However, I am trying a remedy for my sense of smell which was recommended to me by someone else who lost their sense of smell. She said to put a drop of frankinsence in each nostril twice a day. I'm trying it. It has worked a little, but I have not been very diligent in following the directions. We both lost our sense of smell after getting hurt in an accident. Her loss was more severe than mine, so I'm confident that it could work for me, too. Interesting stuff.
Thanks so much Steve & Sherry for supporting my hubs and enjoying my information.
Amy
A friend of mine once went to India and brought back an essential oil of frankincense that cost him US$10. He asked me to smell it to compare it with the Young Living Essential Oil of Frankincense. As soon as I smelled it I was nearly sick. My nose was burning and I started feeling like I needed to freak out. I ran home and got out my own frankincense along with some other oils and snorted and rubbed them all over my nose.
There are certain essential oils that are most commonly manufactured in a lab and sold as pure, therapeutic. One of those is frankincense. So if you do not have the Young Living brand you can be sure it is a mix of low grade frankincense mixed with chemicals made to smell like the real thing. If you cannot smell the difference you cannot tell that it is damaging you.
Here is part of Gary Young's blog on his recent visit to Oman -
"A highlight of the recent trip was inspecting frankincense sources. We traveled to Nirobi, Kenya where I was able to introduce Marc Schreuder and Mary Lou Jacobsen to our frankincense suppliers, and the final leg of our journey brought us to Oman—home to the famed Frankincense Trail. There we were privileged to explore the historical route, and felt blessed to traverse such sacred ground. Interestingly, some companies claim they are purchasing frankincense harvested in Oman, but if they would travel there themselves they would discover that frankinscence is not commercially harvested in Oman and there are no frankincense distilleries currently in operation there. Upon talking with Omani resin brokers they explained that the resin they export commercially is harvested in Somalia and Ethiopia and then shipped to England for distillation."
You do get what you pay for when it comes to essential oils, and it is often very difficult, if you do not have an excellent sense of smell and know how top quality should smell, to know whether you have a synthetically cut oil or not.
True frankincense smells divine. If you do not have the money to pay for that, may I suggest you use the YL peppermint oil. I have had people smell it who have told me they have not been able to smell anything for years, yet they smell the peppermint. One drop of it is equal to 26 cups of peppermint tea.
Good luck.
Jen. I love this and all your posts on the use of essential oils. My best friend and I get together evey fall and spring to make our own 'perfume' using I am sending her your links as I am sure she will find your information extremely helpful. I will be trying to replace what we use with Young Living Essential Oils.
Hi Kim
I am so glad you like my writings and that must be so fun making perfume with a friend. Excellent thing to do.
Great hub, Jennifer. Every year I buy my wife a bottle of El Baccio (sp?). She loves that stuff. The information on oils was all new to me, wow, good to know. Thumbs Up!
