Yes, it is that time of year again. The ads are filled with flowers, chocolates, jewelry and other assorted gift ideas. It must be Valentine's Day. Ah, February 14th -- the day that sparks that age old couple's question: Should we really celebrate this holiday or simply ignore all the hype that goes around it?

Many people complain that Valentine's Day in only a day for boosting retail sales.

My opinion?

Even though I'm a firm believer in doing daily simple things to make your spouse feel special, Valentine's Day is a tremendous opportunity to send an extra special message.

Just make sure to plan ahead. Start by choosing an option that fits your relationship and budget. It is a day where you can spend a little or spend a lot and still get the same desired effect. No reason to skip this holiday because of a lack of money.

Sometimes the least expensive gifts are the most appreciated.

  • A handwritten note
  • A small bouquet of flowers
  • A box of chocolates

Another thoughtful gift that a lot of people overlook is the simple gift of your time. It might be stretching ourselves a bit, but a good way to show someone you really care is to do something for them that they might not necessarily enjoy doing. It might be a chore that you take off their hands just this once.

  • Wash their car
  • Clean a room
  • Vacuum the house
  • Do a load of laundry
  • Do a load of dishes

You would be surprised how much a simple act of service is appreciated.

But if the simple act of service is not your idea of a creative Valentine's Day gift and you need to spend a bit of money, you can keep it simple and inexpensive while still having some fun.

One of the funnest ways we have done in the past is to set a dollar limit for each other. $5, $10, $20, or whatever easily fits your budget.

Now go shopping at the mall together. Give yourselves a 30 minute time limit to go spend the money on each other and meet back at the food court to exhange gifts. This is always fun.

Maybe you've already purchased a gift. Be creative in the giving. Make it into a treasure hunt.

Just have fun with this holiday. Use it as a way to once again show your spouse they are special. Any extra creative ways you come up with will be permanent deposits into your marriage relationship. Please share some of your creative Valentine's Day gift ideas in the comments section below.

Have a great Valentines Day and remember the goal: "A Never Ending Honeymoon" marriage.
