Valentine's Day is a day for lovers and a day when lovers, especially men, purchase romantic gifts for the love of their lives.

What to give is always the question. For most women, chocolate and/or roses are always a safe bet. Having roses delivered to the woman's place of employment is always a good idea as she not only gets the gift of the roses but she also has the pleasure of her coworkers seeing how much she is loved and thought of by her lover whether he is her husband or boyfriend. However, if you are going to give her roses it is a good idea to order early as roses move off the shelves quickly on Valentine's Day.

If you want to be more upscale you can give her jewelry. This is always appreciated and, if she becomes used to you giving her roses or chocolate, jewelry can be a pleasant surprise.

Of course the ultimate gift would be a diamond engagement ring on Valentine's Day. However, this can be a little tricky as you first want to be certain that she feels the same as you and will accept your proposal. This gift can really bomb if her answer is no. The other problem with a diamond engagement ring is that now days many women want to help pick out the ring. This actually makes sense as she will be wearing it every day. Of course, assuming you feel certain that she will say yes to a marriage proposal, you can get around the problem of proposing marriage on Valentine's Day but still letting her help choose the ring, by presenting her not with a ring when you propose but a nice necklace or bracelet with a diamond in it and inviting her to join you in choosing a ring later. In addition to surprising her with the proposal but still letting her help choose the ring you also prolong Valentine's Day for her as you will probably visit the jeweler for the ring on another day.

A romantic poem is also appreciated by many women. If you are very close or if you are married and on a tight budget this can be a very creative gift from the heart. Unless your situation is one of the two above, this can be seen as a cheap substitute for a real gift. However, if you either write your own poem or find one that expresses your love, and include it in the card that accompanies your gift you can make almost any nice gift into a very romantic a personal one with a poem.

In the final analysis, of course, whatever gift you give should be from the heart and truly be a token of your love for your partner. This will make it special and meaningful and, thus, romantic. Otherwise it is simply an obligatory token that you are expected to give because of your relationship. If this is the case, don't waste your time thinking about a romantic gift, instead mark you electronic calendar to remind you to get a gift and then give your credit card to your secretary and ask her to get something to give to your lover on Valentine's Day.
