Simple Diet

Simple Living High Thinking

Let me tell you something. I have been living on a really small budget for years and I have been a vegetarian for at least 30 yrs. Now, not only is vegetarianism ethical, in that it doesn't tie up resources (16 lbs of grains go to make a burger) that might go to feed other people, but also, of course, creates a cruel free environment.

But, I didn't come here to preach, and I'm not part of the Obama/Gore Green Army trying to police/supervise your eating habits. But vegetarians have great choices too. It's not all salads!!

Now, if you have ever been to india, you will know that the staple there is rice, good rice. Pick yourself a good one, like Jasmine or Basmati for about $10/mo for 5 lbs. Next get a bunch of vegetables that you really like, maybe carrots, tomatos, broccolli, peas, corn, whatever, probably for another $20/mo. 4 gallons of Green Tea $12/mo. A variety of lentils and beans, chickpeas, kidney beans, split green peas, whatever $10/mo. Now, I like to start the day off with a Green smoothie. The way to make this is to combine one frozen banana, a handful of spinach and some cacao $15/mo. Cacao is a great anit-oxidant. Coffe or Tea, if you like $10/mo. Snacks: sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds for omega 3 fatty acid oils $10/mo. Omega 3 fatty acid oils are brain food Spices like tumeric, cinnamon, ginger and garlic can also be important in maintaining your health.Tumeric is found in Curry Powder.

So, there you go. You will get plenty of carbohydrates, Vitamins, proteins, and minerals that are needed to keep you healthy. Here are some good recipes.

So, you can see that I haven't even reached $100, and I have extra for perks, if I want a pizza or such.

As an added perk, being a vegetarian is purported to keep you heathier, because ingestion of animal products can cause a burden on the immune system.

Great article and recipes. I have been a chef for twenty years and I am often asked questions about protein sources for vegetarians. Very informative.

I cannot agree more with you Vrajavala: vegetarianism is much healthier and much cheaper. Everyone feels much better, stronger, healthier...and looks younger.

Thanks for this great and practical Hub.

In Pranic healing course they touched on this topic too. As they say that Sun has the highest energy and subsequently as the food chain keeps continuing the plants have some and animals even less. What it means is that latent Prana (life force) is higher in consuming plant based diet which leads to higher energy(consciousness) levels within individuals. Good hub. Here is some more information: http://www.pranichealingfl.com/vegetarianism.htm

that is a beautiful website. Actually it is kind of mind boggling how meat eaters can even put that stuff in their mouths and navigate around bones, etc.

That was for Pranic Healing folks as it is prescribed to be vegetarian to increase our consciousness to be able to heal others. But I also feel that in some harsh environment(Arctic or Deserts) vegetarianism is not possible and also not in every culture it is acceptable (thanksgiving traditions). Let each person decide for themselves when their soul is ready for it.

well that is true. i have heard that argument before. The stranded man on the island has to eat the rabbit. but, what is the rabbit eating? I'm sure if someone were living in the desert they would find wonderful cactus. But, it may be their karma to be born in that Arctic cold, where they can only eat whale blubber. However, by some miracle, they may find themselves suddenly transported. Miracles do happen. as I have said before, I don't try to bludgeon anyone with my beliefs.

However, I do have neighbors who are suffering because they are spending huge amounts of money on eating meat, when they don't have the money to do so. the meat-eater is "conditioned" for something that is not really necessary. however, we don't want to police people, as you say. let them come to the Hare Krsna temple for wonderful prasadam. maybe they can eat their way to Goloka Vrndavan!

I totally agree with you. Prasadam that has been offered to Vishnu/Krishna when consumed does have a liberating effect. It is not ordinary food once it has been offered and slowly the change will take place. We have two women from California(who are both vegetarians) and one of them is into yoga/vedic philosophy. They are so open to learning so many things and even visited our local temple. I guess the more diverse a place one is brought up in the more open they are towards others and their world views when they grow up as adults.
