Magic from the Commedia dell'Arte to today.
If you visit Italy this summer be sure to visit Venice. Now if you go during the summer you will not be able to participate in the carnival, but every street and every corner of this wonderful city has a boutique that sells masks. It is almost impossible to leave the city without a mask.
The venetian mask is an integral part of the typical costume for the carnival. This costume consist of a black cloak called "the tabarro", adorned with a black Tricorn and a white mask called the Bauta. While they were part of the carnival, prior to 1797 they were worn most of the year and gave permission to the nobless to hide their transgressions. Both men and women participated in excesses while masked.
The Bauta
The Bauta is the most famous mask. Some other famous masks come from the Commedia dell' Arte "The Plague Doctor", characterized by a long beak, Harlequin easily recognized for his coloful costume, Colombine the beautiful, Pantalone the merchant fool who has found his way into English culture. The Mattaccino was a clown of the carnival.
Today's masks are still inspired from the comedia del arte, but the carnival is a popular celebration and the public is different. Regardless, the beauty and the enchanting magical character of Venetian masks will never stop to fascinate us.
Perhaps you will consider one of these wonders for your nextcostume party

Hey Mireille,
I love the pics!! I have to ask where you obtained that picture of the Bauta mask (the one with the gold decoration on the top side and golden lips)? I love the look of that mask, and is possible I'd like to get one like it.
