Why is a Healthy Energy Drink better?

There is a really healthy (some say insanely healthy) energy drink on the market called Verve Energy drink. There is much controversy over energy drinks right now, and a lot of people are putting them down. We agree, there are good and bad things about energy drinks, but really, it all depends on what ingredients are in them.

Over the last 20 years, energy drinks have replaced coffee and tea for teenagers and young adults. For people in their teens, 20s and 30s, energy drinks have replaced coffee and are used for a quick pick-me-up during long workweeks and late nights. So, we find young people drinking lots of energy drinks to keep awake when cramming for exams, or writing those papers they've left until the last minute.

So, young people often drink a number of cans of energy drinks while they're studying or finishing off a paper for college, or staying up late working at something they want finished, to keep them awake. Some of these drinks can cause lightheadedness and nausea, especially if someone has been only eating junk food and drinking sugar loaded and caffeine beverages. More often than not, the person will end up conking out from all the sugar in their blood stream, and then they might sleep through the next day, missing out on important events they were preparing for initially.

POPULARITY OF ENERGY DRINKS

Industry consulting firm Beverage Marketing says that energy drink sales have increased nearly 700% since 2001 and they account for a $5.6 billion domestic market. In 2007, just in the US alone, 262 million gallons of energy drinks were consumed. They are very popular in Europe and Australia also.

The average 8oz energy drink has approximately 80mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to a cup of coffee. Some energy drink companies have actually inserted as much as 300mg of caffeine into their products. A lot of the energy drinks actually do more harm than good because they contain little more than sugar and caffeine.

So, what is the solution to all this? How can someone get enough energy to stay up for an all night cram or late-night work session?

The Healthy Good Stuff

Find a healthier drink energy drink instead. If you look at the label on the drink, you can see what ingredients are in there. Vitamins are a good start. Those that support health are vitamins A, B, C, D, which are found in many fruits and vegetables. The human body doesn't store vitamins, so we need to consume them regularly to avoid vitamin deficiencies.

A small dose of any vitamin that you're deficient in will probably help you feel better. Research shows that B vitamins, most commonly B1 to B12, can help support metabolism, boost energy and enhance immune system. This is why these vitamins are often added to energy drinks.

In addition, look for minerals such as potassium, zinc and calcium. The body can't naturally produce these plant sourced minerals so your body craves them. One example is bone health from calcium. It's up to you to add these essential nutrients to your diet, because the body doesn't produce them by itself. This is why companies that make orange juice add calcium to their products, and iodine is added to table salt. To keep your body running at peak condition, your body needs a wide spectrum of essential minerals.

If you see anything exotic on the label, such as green tea, taurine, guarana and exotic fruit extracts, these are really good for you. Green tea is one of the most widely recognized sources of free-radical fighting antioxidants and has been widely documented for its traditional healing properties and use. Exotic fruits like mangosteen have been shown to be rich in antioxidants, essential nutrients and restorative properties. Traditional healing doctors in India use the mangosteen pericarp (rind). The mangosteen rind is rich in phytonutrients and has cellular restorative functions.

So, before you purchase your next energy drink, have a look at what ingredients it has. If you're interested in getting natural energy from being healthy, as well as that energy boost, then choose a healthy energy drink. One healthy energy drink I love is the Verve Energy Drink, which contains the whole spectrum of vitamins, essential minerals, plus exotic nutrients like mangosteen and green tea.

Great Hub! Energy drinks have replaced my coffee but I didn't look too much into the ingredients. This looks like one powerful healthy energy drink. I'm all for more energy and health.

Thanks

With sons in their 20's and early 30's I've had moments of feeling concerned about the so-called 'energy' drinks they choose... always glad to hear about more and healthier choices... so how is the taste of Verve?

The taste of Verve Mary? It's really really yummy. I like it so much that even when the can is empty, I keep it near me just for the smell of it. It tastes like passionfruit. There's a drink which I think is only made here in Australia, called Passiona, and it tastes just like that.

I used to drink some of those energy drinks that are advertised all the time. Then I really started reading the label and reading about them. There is SO much sugar in them! I went back to coffee for a minute, but I am trying mangosteen juice. I like the combination of green tea and mangosteen in the Verve drink.

Verve Energy Drink? Is it really possible for an energy drink to be healthy as well? That would really be great news if verve energy drink is much more than an energy drink. Interesting Hub...

Hi Meg, you asked "can energy drinks be taken as many as one wants in a day?"

Energy drinks should not be taken all the time. It's recommended that people only drink 3 cans of Verve energy drink a day. If an energy drink is healthy, the energy should last at least 5 to 6 hours anyway.

Thank you Julieanne. My teenager has the tendency to just take it as often as he wants, like water. I don't want him to be up all night, up and about totally energized. :-)
