1. Time to renew? Think it through: When your auto policy comes up for renewal, take the opportunity to shop around. Even though some companies promise to do the shopping for you (i.e. Progressive), it never hurts to do the research yourself. Take the time to search comparison car insurance websites and call a local insurance agent.

2. Car insurance discounts: Many discounts are available to drivers. While an agent will typically ask you these questions, be sure to ask to make sure you're getting the lowest possible rate. Discounts are available for drivers with clean records, members of professional associations, and students. Taking a defensive driving course in your area can also lower your rate.

3. Choose a high deductible: A deductible is the amount of money you'll pay out of pocket before your insurer begins to pay on a claim. The higher you set your collision and comprehensive deductibles, the lower your insurance premium will be. For example, raising a low deductible of around $100 to a mid-range deductible of $500 will likely save you hundreds of dollars on your annual insurance premium.

4. Lower your policy's coverage levels: A common mistake many people make is carrying more coverage than they need. A car insurance agent won't always discuss the lowest levels allowed by your state since they're trying to sell a more expensive premium. Look online to see what the minimum coverage you need is by searching your state's DMV website. It's also common to see people carrying useless comprehensive insurance on old vehicles. An example of this would be someone insuring a car worth $1000 with a comprehensive policy that requires a $1000 deductible.

5. Combine coverage: Look into combining your auto insurance with your renters or home owners insurance. Many companies offer discounts if you're willing to insure multiple items with them.
