Shrek Is A Fanatstic Movie

What a fantastic movie. The animation in Shrek is the best I have seen. I really enjoyed the story line too. Very clever, witty and keeps your attention. If you haven't seen Shrek then you should.

Shrek Plot Summary

Shrek (voice of Mike Myers) is a large, intimidating, solitude-loving ogre, who lives a quiet life in his home in a swamp. But this peaceful life is shattered when he inadvertently rescues the stubborn and talkative Donkey (voice of Eddie Murphy) from soldiers sent by ruthless ruler of the Kingdom of Duloc, Lord Farquaad (voice of John Lithgow), who have been tasked to round up all fairy tale creatures. Farquaad is obsessed with ruling a perfect kingdom and uses the Magic-Mirror-on-the-Wall (voice of Chris Miller) to select a princess bride he can marry in order to become a king. He chooses Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), who is held captive in a castle inside a volcano and guarded by a fire-breathing dragon.

Much to Shrek's chagrin, Lord Farquaad has relocated all the fairy tale creatures to Shrek's swamp.

Shrek and Donkey immediately head off to the Kingdom of Duloc so they can complain to Farquaad and Shrek can get his swamp back. When Shrek and Donkey get to the Kingdom, they interrupt a tournament Farquaad is holding in order to select a knight worthy of rescuing Princess Fiona. Shrek fights the knights, with some help from Donkey, and defeats them. Lord Farquaad proclaims Shrek the winner of the tournament and agrees to remove the fairy tale creatures from the swamp if Shrek rescues Fiona.

When they get to the volcano, Shrek and Donkey split up and go looking for the princess. The dragon sees Donkey and attacks him. Shrek grabs the dragon's tail and is catapulted into the princess's chambers. Donkey, meanwhile, has discovered that the dragon is female, and begins to flirt with her in order to prevent her from killing him. She takes a liking to him, but just before she kisses him, Shrek uses a chandelier to collar the dragon and rescue Donkey. The three make it out of the volcano safely.

Fiona believes that Shrek is her true love come to rescue her but becomes angry when she learns that he is not a handsome prince but instead is an ogre. True to his word and wanting only to get his swamp back, Shrek explains the situation and forces Fiona to come back to Duloc. At first she is not happy about the arrangement and Shrek has to carry her.

As night approaches, Fiona insists on camping for the evening and hides herself in cave. Shrek and Donkey continue to bond as friends, and Shrek shows a softer side to him than one would think an ogre has. Fiona overhears their conversation and, in the morning, seems to want to make up for her previous behavior and makes them all breakfast.

As they continue on, Shrek and Donkey learn that Fiona isn't a typical damsel-in-distress. At one point, she beats up Robin Hood (voice of Vincent Cassel) and his band of merry men when they attempt to "rescue" Fiona from Shrek. She displays impressive Matrix-inspired martial arts (including a "bullet time" element). Fiona also appears to enjoy the same culinary oddities, such as flies, that Shrek does. The nearer they get to Duloc, the more a bond develops between Shrek and Fiona, with Donkey suspecting that the two are growing romantically interested in each other.

After dinner, as Shrek and Fiona are about to kiss, Donkey interrupts the moment and Fiona sees that sundown is coming. She hides in a windmill and leaves a confused Shrek to walk off for a while. Donkey goes inside the windmill to see if Fiona is okay and is terrified to see a female ogre, who turns out to be Fiona. She explains that when she was a little girl, a witch cast an enchantment that makes her turn human by day and ogress by night, but the spell can be broken by true love's first kiss. Fiona is disgusted by her appearance and makes comments that Shrek, hearing only bits of her conversation with Donkey, misinterprets as insults about him being an ugly, hideous creature. Unseen by the other two, Shrek walks away, angry and heartbroken. Donkey promises Fiona that he won't tell anyone about her secret, but convinces her to reveal the situation to Shrek.

The sun rises, bringing with it Fiona's human form, and she reluctantly begins tell the truth to Shrek. He angrily refuses to listen to her explanations. Soon, Farquaad and his men arrive near the windmill to escort Fiona the rest of the way to Duloc. Farquaad gives Shrek the deed to his swamp and tells him to go. Deed in hand, Shrek begins his trek back home with a determined Donkey trying to tell Shrek about Fiona, But he was too irritated to listen and Shrek was so angry with Donkey that he ends their friendship and goes back to his swamp, which is now cleared as agreed by Farquaad. Donkey, saddened, wanders away and meets the dragon, who is crying by a stream.

An angry Donkey returns to the swamp soon after Shrek, and starts to remind what Shrek had done to him. He then says that he doesn't need to be mad at Fiona because, from the looks of it, she feels the same way about him as he does about her. Shrek doesn't believe him because he still thinks Fiona called him a hideous ugly beast. Donkey then tells Shrek that she was talking about someone else. Shrek feels remorseful and apologizes to Donkey. Reconciled as friends, they head off to Duloc on the back of the dragon.

The wedding is almost over when Shrek bursts in. Shrek tells Fiona that she shouldn't marry Farquaad because he's only marrying her so he can be king. An angry Farquaad denies this and finds it humorous that Shrek is in love with Fiona. Farquaad then tries to kiss Fiona, thus completing the marriage, but as sunset comes, Fiona becomes an ogress once again, revealing her secret to everyone, including Shrek and Farquaad. A disgusted Farquaad orders his soldiers to take them both away, vowing that he will still be king. A fight ensues and Shrek is soon outnumbered. He whistles for the dragon who bursts in through a large stained-glass window and swallows Farquaad whole, saving Shrek and Fiona. Shrek confesses to Fiona that he loves her. He kisses her and breaks the spell, but she remains an ogress. Fiona believes she is no longer beautiful, but Shrek tells her otherwise.

A happy Fiona reconciles with Shrek and the two are married. The film then ends with all fairy tale creatures starting a party in Shrek's swamp and singing. Donkey appears to be married to Fiona's dragon guardian, and the newly wedded Shrek and Fiona go on their honeymoon.
