Vessel sinks are seeing a resurgence in contemporary bathroom design – and with good reason: their beauty is hard to match.

As contemporary home design gets a facelift for the 21st century, one product which is making a big splash in the bathroom department are vessel sinks.

What are they?

They are basically “standalone” sinks, that sit on top of a bathroom cabinet, counter or vanity unit, rather like a bowl, although they can also be recessed into the cabinet so that only the top part of the sink is visible. Usually they are well-designed with a stylish, minimalist aesthetic, and they are quite simply one of the best-looking, most fashionable things you can put in your bathroom.

Installation

Before investing in this type of sink you should take care to know which types of sink will fit correctly with your bathroom and existing plumbing system. Once you know that, there is a whole world of choice available to you.

Which material?

  • Stone

Stone is one of the most popular manufacturing materials for these sinks and can be used to great effect to produce a rustic, traditional and homely feel, while still being completely modern. High quality stone sinks are usually on the upper-end of the market, often using semi-precious stones such as quartz crystal as a building material. Often they have a striking “marbled” effect.

  • Glass

There are few things that evoke such a pure aesthetic as water in a glass sink, which makes glass a great, contemporary choice for these sinks. The glass used in these sinks is far from fragile: it is “tempered glass”, which it much stronger than glass typically found in windows, while retaining its beautiful glassy finish. A great choice for design

  • Ceramic

Ceramic vessel sinks are again a very popular choice of manufacturing material in vessels. Popular ceramic materials include china, which offers a smooth, brilliant, white surface, that is both practical maintain and impressive to look at. Many ceramic sink types have a non-porous surface which makes them durable and immune to discolouration over time.

  • Bronze

Bronze sinks are one of the ultimate bathroom luxuries. They are quite simply stunning to look at, and bring to mind beauty and antiquity. Usually found in the upper-end of the market, a bronze sink cannot fail to impress, and with the right care – a bit of regular polishing and cleaning – they will retain their beautiful finish for years to come.

  • Copper

Forget the myth that copper sinks are difficult to maintain. They may need a gentle rub down after use, but besides that they are one of the most hygienic and hassle-free materials for your sink – and of course they look great. Copper vessel sinks have a rustic, homely feel which will only increase over time as the metal develops a “patina”, or colouration, which is caused by exposure to oxygen.

  • Stainless Steel

Despite being much more popular as a kitchen feature than in the bathroom, stainless steel is still a simple and affordable choice when investing in vessel sinks.

  • Open Question: Someone help me understand the meaning of this poem!!?

Lament Sleep and death, the dark eagles Rush all night long round this head: The golden image of Man Swallowed in the icy wave of eternity. On dreadful reefs The crimson body shatters And the dark voice mourns Above the sea. Sister of stormy dejection Look, an anxious vessel Sinks down beneath the stars The Silent face of night. • Resolved Question: Is a man really supposed to consider his life less important on a sinking vessel than a woman's life?

It's one thing to let the children go first, but to automatcially let a bunch of women who I don't even know or didn't even score with, not that's just downright insulting to me. LET'S PRETEND THAT WHEN THE VESSEL SINKS, THAT THE IT'S GUARANTEED DEATH FOR EVERYONE WHO SINKS, NO SURVIVORS. If I'm on a sinking vessel with not enough lifeboats, am I really supposed to consider my life less important and die so all women can live so that I die? WHY? What the hell makes my life so unimportant that they're supposed to live and I'm supposed to die? What the hell makes them so much more important than me? Am I supposed to just give them the big thumbs up with a huge smile on my face for them as they get on the lifeboat and live while I drown on the vessel and die? If I was a sinking vessel, would you really want me to die if they're weren't enough lifeboats? I actually value my life and plan to have a good future for myself, so does that make me a bad person if I try to get on a lifeboat if all those who drown meet instant death? It's one thing for a man to be a gentleman and do nice things for her, even I'll agree to that, but when you're talking life and death, come on! What makes her more importaqnt than him? She's not. - 5 weeks ago

  • Resolved Question: What should I do to this bathroom? I'm trying to remodel it?

This is the small guest restroom: http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c378/trisheroll/?action=view¤t=IMG00079.jpg http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c378/trisheroll/?action=view¤t=IMG00082.jpg http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c378/trisheroll/?action=view¤t=IMG00084.jpg http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c378/trisheroll/?action=view¤t=IMG00085.jpg It just got new granite and sink. • Resolved Question: I'm trying to find a countertop and tile color for bath remodel?

I chose cabinets that are chocolate in color, it is very dark; almost black. The vessel sinks are a mix of golden yellow, copper, and supposedly dark brown (you can see the picture @ overstock.com, it's the Kraus Fire Opal Vessel Sink). The walls are very close to the yellow in the bowl (I believe it's called Autumn Gold from Behr). I'm trying to figure out what quartz or granite countertop to go with these colors and then a tile for the floor and shower. I was thinking a medium gray countertop color, but I'm not sure if that would go. I'm afraid if I go with a brown countertop, it would be too much brown in the room, because I think the tile then would also have to be a dark beige to a light brown. My husband doesn't like the way a lighter colored countertop looks on top of the dark cabinets (he thinks it looks like frosting on a cake). I think it would look nice, but I'm hoping we can find a color we both agree on. The room has a lot of light because of a skylight. - 2 months ago

  • Voting Question: Please help me pick!?

Which sink would look better in my bathroom? I'm building a new house. The master bath will have a jacuzzi tub with beige tile with some tan and brown swirls in it, the floor will match this tile. The vanity is a chocolate brown and the countertop is a cream colored granite. I plan to paint the walls red 1) http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Glenn-Modern-Glass-Vessel-Bathroom-Sink/3228904/product.html 2) http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Kraus-14-inch-Brown-Clear-Glass-Vessel-Sink/3195298/product.html 3) http://www.amazon.com/Tervera-Bathroom-Counter-Undermount-Installation/dp/B001U65KSU/ref=sr_1_46?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1248127963&sr=1-46 - 4 months ago
