Vessel Sinks – The Stylish Sink Choice with a Natural Feel
56Vessel sinks are seeing a resurgence in contemporary bathroom design – and with good reason: their beauty is hard to match.
As contemporary home design gets a facelift for the 21st century, one product which is making a big splash in the bathroom department are vessel sinks.
What are they?
They are basically “standalone” sinks, that sit on top of a bathroom cabinet, counter or vanity unit, rather like a bowl, although they can also be recessed into the cabinet so that only the top part of the sink is visible. Usually they are well-designed with a stylish, minimalist aesthetic, and they are quite simply one of the best-looking, most fashionable things you can put in your bathroom.
Installation
Before investing in this type of sink you should take care to know which types of sink will fit correctly with your bathroom and existing plumbing system. Once you know that, there is a whole world of choice available to you.
Which material?
- Stone
Stone is one of the most popular manufacturing materials for these sinks and can be used to great effect to produce a rustic, traditional and homely feel, while still being completely modern. High quality stone sinks are usually on the upper-end of the market, often using semi-precious stones such as quartz crystal as a building material. Often they have a striking “marbled” effect.
- Glass
There are few things that evoke such a pure aesthetic as water in a glass sink, which makes glass a great, contemporary choice for these sinks. The glass used in these sinks is far from fragile: it is “tempered glass”, which it much stronger than glass typically found in windows, while retaining its beautiful glassy finish. A great choice for design
- Ceramic
Ceramic vessel sinks are again a very popular choice of manufacturing material in vessels. Popular ceramic materials include china, which offers a smooth, brilliant, white surface, that is both practical maintain and impressive to look at. Many ceramic sink types have a non-porous surface which makes them durable and immune to discolouration over time.
- Bronze
Bronze sinks are one of the ultimate bathroom luxuries. They are quite simply stunning to look at, and bring to mind beauty and antiquity. Usually found in the upper-end of the market, a bronze sink cannot fail to impress, and with the right care – a bit of regular polishing and cleaning – they will retain their beautiful finish for years to come.
- Copper
Forget the myth that copper sinks are difficult to maintain. They may need a gentle rub down after use, but besides that they are one of the most hygienic and hassle-free materials for your sink – and of course they look great. Copper vessel sinks have a rustic, homely feel which will only increase over time as the metal develops a “patina”, or colouration, which is caused by exposure to oxygen.
- Stainless Steel
Despite being much more popular as a kitchen feature than in the bathroom, stainless steel is still a simple and affordable choice when investing in vessel sinks.

Vessel Sink FAQ
- Open Question: Of Beauty First Glimpsed?
Of Beauty First Glimpsed Allow me to remark upon the beauty of womanhood, So stoically composed yet thus remains its subtle intricacy. When I first laid eyes on beauty, I wept at its demur demeanor, Woefully silent in its steadfastness, resigned to unhappiness; Yet it was then that love reigned o’er my heart, Ne’er to relinquish its hold upon such fleeting chance, For tragedy lay not far behind, tho I knew it not. Oft was the hour that I gazed upon her shadow In rooms far off from my marauding sight, Cast amidst the pale contours of moonlight That rested there, upon the feminine curls and weaves Of golden fire divine; Heaven such beauty had ne’er known! And oft by chance I would catch her napping Against the windowpane, her cheek resting upon the glass, Against which winter all but cast its frigid fleets, Caught amidst the lengthened nights, and pale dawns. Yet of beauty, if I may so proclaim, I caught the wistfulness of age settled, Stretched tautly o’er youth’s steady retreat; O, but were it not true that we so young Would spurn age’s approaching onslaught, And turn our wits, our hours to more prudent things. For Time had begun its solemn march unto the grave, Retreating into the sea from whence it came, And I gazed upon the ship as it receded from sight, Caught in the throes of tempests dark, lost amidst the sorrows That undoubtedly teemed from its rupturing hull, For alas! fair beauty lay sequestered in ship’s cabin, Enchained to duty, bound with the links of mortality, aged; And with storms all about and lightning as flaming demons thronged, Did such a vessel sink, forever lost to mortal eyes, Till Heaven and Earth reside at last complete, And fair beauty no longer in dark shadows, subside. - Voting Question: the problem was written below...need help!?
a passenger vessel about 150 m long has 10000 tons deadweight. its maximum allowable number of passengers and crew is 700. as it sails out to sea, its cargo and supplies comprise 50% of its allowable load. later the ship's officers decide to accomodate more passengers until the total number of crew and passengers aboard the vessel reaches 4000. a) calculate the buoyant force of on the total cargo and passengers. assume an average mass of 5 kg for each passenger. density of sea water is 1025 kg/m^3 and g=9.8 N/kg. b) the vessel sank when it collided with a freighter at sea. can the vessel owners be held liable for overloading? - 9 days ago
- Resolved Question: Pressure problem experts in physics ? (try this!)?
1. Calculate the downward force exerted by the atmosphere on your head. If your flat top is approximately 6cm in radius, barometer reading is 75.6 Hg, and dHg is 13 600 kg/m^3. 2. A diver swims horizontally 8m below the water surface. How much pressure acts on his back? Let us assume that the density of salt water is 1025 kg/m^3, atmospheric pressure is 75cm Hg; dHg = 13, 600kg/m^3;and g=9.8N/kg. 3. A big stone weighs 200N in air. When immersed in seawater, it weighs only 140N. If the density of seawater is 1025 kg/m^3 and g=9.8N/kg, find the following a. Buoyant force of the sea water b. volume of displaced water c. volume of the stone 4. A 60 kg survivor of a shipwreck sits on a block of wood having dimensions 2.0m x 1.0m x 0.8m. Two thirds of the volume of the wood is under seawater(density = 1025kg/m^3). 5. A passenger vessel about 150m long has 10000 tons dead-weight. Its maximum allowable number of passengers and crew is 700. As it sails out to sea, its cargo and supplies comprise 50 percent of its allowable load. later the ships officer decide to accommodate more passengers until the total number of crew and passengers aboard the vessel reaches 4000. a. calculate the buoyant force on the total cargo and passengers. Assume an average mass of 65 kg for each passenger. Density of seawater is 1025kg/m^3 and g is 9.8N/kg b. the vessel sank when it collided with a freighter at sea. - Resolved Question: Someone help me understand the meaning of this poem!!?
Lament Sleep and death, the dark eagles Rush all night long round this head: The golden image of Man Swallowed in the icy wave of eternity. On dreadful reefs The crimson body shatters And the dark voice mourns Above the sea. Sister of stormy dejection Look, an anxious vessel Sinks down beneath the stars The Silent face of night. - Resolved Question: Is a man really supposed to consider his life less important on a sinking vessel than a woman's life?
It's one thing to let the children go first, but to automatcially let a bunch of women who I don't even know or didn't even score with, not that's just downright insulting to me. LET'S PRETEND THAT WHEN THE VESSEL SINKS, THAT THE IT'S GUARANTEED DEATH FOR EVERYONE WHO SINKS, NO SURVIVORS. If I'm on a sinking vessel with not enough lifeboats, am I really supposed to consider my life less important and die so all women can live so that I die? WHY? What the hell makes my life so unimportant that they're supposed to live and I'm supposed to die? What the hell makes them so much more important than me? Am I supposed to just give them the big thumbs up with a huge smile on my face for them as they get on the lifeboat and live while I drown on the vessel and die? If I was a sinking vessel, would you really want me to die if they're weren't enough lifeboats? I actually value my life and plan to have a good future for myself, so does that make me a bad person if I try to get on a lifeboat if all those who drown meet instant death? It's one thing for a man to be a gentleman and do nice things for her, even I'll agree to that, but when you're talking life and death, come on! What makes her more importaqnt than him? She's not. - 2 months ago
