Vicodin and Percocet to Possibly Be Taken Off The Market
63Vicodin and Percocet causes Health Concerns
July 8, 2009
An advisory Committee to the food and Drug Administration on, 2009 recommended restricting the use of Acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is used in many common over the counter drugs as well. Mostly referred to as Tylenol. The reason the Advisory Committee is looking into this is because of possible liver damage.
Vicodin and Percocet are the most commonly prescribed pain killers for short term injuries, dental pain and long term pain management. They contain large amounts of Acetaminophen. Taking over the counter Tylenol or other remedies with acetaminophen along with these Narcotics can easily cause liver failure or even death.
Other Prescribed Medications with Acetaminophen are Lortab, Tylenol with Codeine. Magnacet, Endocet and Darvacet. Taking these prescription drugs alone can cause dependency and adding over the counter meds to it greatly increases you chance of liver disease.
Taking Acetaminophen Safely
The Food and Drug Administration recommends that for a single adult acetaminophen dose should be no more that 4000 mg. per day. Extra Strength Tylenol has 500 mg. The regular strength contains 325mg each. Taking about twice the recommended dose can result in liver damage in a healthy person.

I take Tylenol on occasion but have respect for it as I have known for years it can cause liver damage. When I broke my arm several years ago, I refused to take Vioxx, as I went online did research and found it to be a dangerous drug; sure enough it was taken off the market within the year I received a prescription for it.
Thanks for writing this and reminding us to be cautious!
Helpful information ! thanks a lot :)
I just want to say "DUH!" Sheesh.. It's been known for YEARS Tylenol causes liver damage! Good hub Dori!
you know I wasn't aware if this until recently when my mother's doctor warned of her taking tylenol pm while taking her pain medication for Lupus. I was kinda shocked and then it was like, duh.

So it's the Acetomenaphine and not the narcotics that make these drugs unsafe? Interesting. Especially since hospitals hand out Tylenol like it's candy. Shudder.
well ofcourse the narcotics are addicting but it is the tylenol that can cause the liver problems. There are many other problems narcotics can cause to have some of these harsh pain drugs made available to those who are incessive pain for a short lenght of time.. Or limit the amount a physician can write. That might cut down on the drug seeking, but it's all about the money. Nearly every narcotic pain reliever has acetaminophen, why they pick those two is because it has more, and more street value.

I would seriously be upset if they quit using it. I was diagnosed with a Rare Neru spine disease last summer, and if it was'nt for those pain relievers,...I'd throw myself under the bus and call it a life. I do however think that theirs many people who are getting them, abusing them, illeagly re selling them and thats needs to be address'ed. However those who truly need them should decide for themselves if they are will to take the chance of liver damage. Hell I'll probally die from my disease before my liver goes,...LOL
