Video Game Tester Jobs: Are They For You?

If you are a true-blue-and-proud-of-it video game geek, and you've practically slain all online villains, conquered all puzzle levels and accumulated all power-ups possible in most games, you may want to put your competitive skills to more beneficial use, by actually being paid to play video games. There are jobs out there that can use your expertise in this field - that is, if you have learned great technical expertise and you are willing to glue your hindquarters to a player's chair for long periods of time literally.

Game testers are actually very important to the video game industry. They are the ones that perform the trial runs for the games so as to see if there are any defects in the software programming. As part of the video game development, game testers are literally the quality controllers of the project.

Now, the romantic notion is that any video game geek can just go up to a video development company and find a permanent and fulfilling job. Not so, according to the experts in the field of video development. Professional video game testers should be well-versed with analytical competence, highly skilled in technical and computer aspects of gaming and yes, he or she can endure the long, boring hours of repeatedly playing the same game until it runs without any glitches at all.

Just how many hours are we talking about? Let's see. Despite advances in technology and software development, games (no mater how mundane or cool) usually takes one to three years to develop.

Video game testers are called in sometime midway or three-quarters after the initials have been set. So, if we have at the very least, a one-year program development time frame (that's 365 days); and you get called in ¾ of the way, you get to have 3 months or 90 days (more or less) playing the same game repeatedly.

Imagine if it's a 3 year software development project and they want your expertise started midway during the run. That would equate to about 547 days of daily playing (say, on an 8-hour shift); or 18 months; or 1 year and 6 months playing the same game over and over.

There are no chances of variety here until the project finishes and you are assigned to a new video game.

Video game testers are given specific schedules to follow, given specific instructions as to how to play the games, and they must plot out specific errors when and where they occur. They should also try to pinpoint exactly what they were doing at that moment (i.e. what keys did they press or what combination of keys affected the program?) so as to give program developers the heads-up on possible glitches that may (or may not) affect the entire run of the game.

Video game testers are also given the task of seeing how much damage one disk or shot or cartridge can take before it refuses to run properly.

How Is It Done?

As soon as the trial game is issued, video game testers immediately play the game. They must meticulously note and plot out all errors that occur, especially the minor ones like disjointed imagery or loss of sound or unresponsiveness of some commands. Major errors include the programs' logic error and bugs in the shifting of levels.

An example of an error log in a game would look like: Window pane in level 2, Room of Antiquity, is missing all four corners. However, in most cases, one technical error can be so complex to describe in detail that it takes the video game tester several paragraphs (even pages) of documentation. The error needs to be really plotted out so that when the reports are given back to the programmers, they can easily search, pinpoint and correct the said errors. Once the error is fixed, the game is returned to the testers and they must play the game again and again and again until it is finally fit for public release.

This job description is more tedious and mentally taxing than the romantic notion many of us carry. There is a high-mortality rate, (so to speak) in this field that most video game testers seek other programming positions soon after.
