Vieques Puerto Ricos Bio-Bay

For those that want a once in a life time trip with something unforgettable there is a place in the Caribbean on the island of Puerto Rico in Vieques called the Biobay. In the darkness of night in the clear blue waters (dark at night) there is a magic that happens through a miracle of nature. When you swim in the waters of the bay the water glows blue around you as you swim creating angelic like light forms around your body.  Fish dart about like shooting stars through the water as the stars glow above. There is nothing quite like the experience of swimming around in a glowing sea.

What Creates the Glow?

The bay contains a single-celled bioluminescent dinoflagellates. These half-plant, half-animal organisms emit a flash of bluish light when agitated at night. The high concentration of these creatures (Pyrodimium bahamense) can create enough light to read a book from.

Yeah this is a cool place. There are so many magical yet unknown places on Earth to visit, almost alien in ways. There are lakes of brine under the ocean where the heavier water has shores and an eco system all itself. Amazing places on an amazing world. One day when I'm an old man I hope to see them all myself.
