Exploring the Philippines: Historic Vigan
77Vigan holds a unique place in the Philippines. It’s history runs deep and can be seen in the Spanish style architecture and cobblestone streets. Prior to the Spanish colonial period, Vigan was a major trading port, its location on Northern Luzon made it a convenient stopping off point for Chinese merchant ships.
It takes a seven-hour drive to get from Manila to Luzon. The roads are well kept and smooth. It is easy for tourists making the rounds in Luzon to make Vigan a stopping point. The city is easy to get around on foot, though trishaws and horse drawn carts are also transportation options. Some sights:1. The mestizo district has architecture and atmosphere that harkens back to the town’s trading days. There are many antiques for sale at shops in the mestizo district. Though most of these are not authentic, they make good souvenirs as long as the price is not too high. Being a former Spanish colony, most of the “antiques” are religious in nature. Simply wandering the cobblestone streets is a treat for the eye and the imagination. 2. Plaza Burgos is attractive both for its food vendors and festivals. There are local favorites as well as some unique fusion foods from Spanish times. Empanada, for example, is given a uniquely Filipino flare. Located next to the mestizo district, this is a great venue to start a walking tour of the area. 3. St. Paul's Cathedral has architecture, which underlines Vigan’s unique past. The church is built in Spanish colonial style, though some of the interior details came from China. For the most sublime views in the city, head to another church: St. Augustine Church. Visitors can climb up to the church’s bell tower for a panorama of Vigan and the sea beyond. One of the most attractive aspects of visiting the area’s churches is that there is never an admission charge. 4. The Ayala Museum holds local historical exhibits including artifacts from Luzon’s native Ilocano people. There is also an exhibit paying tribute to Joseph Burgos, a local religious hero. 5. Nearby Mindoro Beach is a good place to sample the seaside scenery. There is a nice beach and the chance for a few water sports. Vigan shows that the history of the Philippines is as diverse as its present. The deeply rooted Spanish influence is on full display in Vigan and its environs. Even if history does not interest you, the atmosphere is Vigan is un-missable.
