Golf Club Collection Specializing: Deciding on Form to Focus On

Collecting vintage golf clubs can be based on several things. Although many continue to collect clubs according to their rare forms, there are others who specialize in their collection and focus only on specific eras or forms of the clubs. A thorough browsing of the history of golf will give any collector the perspective on materials used, the winners of tourneys over the last century, and even the changes in the rules that may have led to the decline of particular gold club forms.

Specializing on collecting vintage golf clubs based on the materials can also highly depend on history. The different faces on the heads, especially if they are unusual, can fetch a high price on the collectors’ market. The value of wooden golf clubs may depend on their producer, the user, and even their historical value; since wooden shafts are more likely to be damaged over time, finding a wooden golf club from the 19th century can raise its value. But always remember to know your golf history, especially when it comes to the manufacturers.

Before standardized golf clubs were introduced, there were many blacksmiths who created their own designs for the faces of golf club heads, thus earning their reputation in the makings of golf clubs. Finding famous names and seeing their designs are always a bonus. The early versions of the MacGregor golf clubs are highly sought after, although particular years of their make can put a higher value on other vintage golf clubs.

Learning how to track these vintage golf clubs is important, but the first step is to always knowing what to look for. Continuously updating your historical knowledge of golf, no matter how trivial, will always be the key to adding the classics to your vintage golf clubs collection. The rest can be done through patience, time, and ability to track these golf clubs down.

I was in a golf shop business with Jimmy Clark in the early 80's. He played the senior tour and knew the president of Lynx Golf. The president had a set of Predator clubs made for a woman that he gave to his daughter, but she did not want to be a golfer and gave them back. He gave them to Jimmy and he sold them to me. I have golfed with them ever since and wondered if they really are the only set of Predators ever made for women. They are really great clubs, but my nephew says I need to modernize. Can you tell me anything about this?thanks, Nancy Capel
