Today, vintage haute couture fashion is a very popular subject in the fashion and style industry, supported very aggressively by museums, art theatres, and on the catwalk in fashion shows in London, Paris, New York, Milan and all the top fashion cities of the world.

Vintage haute couture fashion is always purchased by people who love buying something unique. They are people who love art, and when you love art, you love rare items, especially dated pieces with a historical background.

It is a well known fact that fashion designers, up until the early 60's, produced stylish haute couture clothing and accessories, with aesthetics, quality and longevity in mind.

Let's be creative and re-define our fashion sense. Let's retreat to the glorious haute couture days, when designers like Christian Dior, and Cristobal Balenciaga were re-defining independent womanhood.

THE REVOLUTION OF HAUTE COUTURE FASHION

Back then when, Coco Chanel revolutionized haute couture fashion, through replacing the traditional and conventional corseted silhouette with comfortable and simple suits along with long and lean dresses.

Let us escape to the land of vintage couture, or vintage inspired creations, where we can discover a myriad of classic, yet affordable vintage haute couture and classic accessories.

WHY SHOULD WE CONSIDER THESE TRENDS?

There is plenty of reasons for us to consider these trends from a different angle. Whether we are feeling the pinch financially, wanting to challenge fast throw-away fashion, or, are simply striving to be individual yet bang on trend, let's all still do it the vintage couture way.

In the last few years, vintage haute couture fashion has become hot, as celebrities, socialites, and more and more ordinary women are starting to wear it.

Vintage has become a style for self assured women who wear clothes that make them feel well; clothes that suit their body shape rather than the latest high street trends.

You will discover an injection of retro or vintage styling in a vast range of their designs.

At the recent catwalks in Paris, Milan, New York and London, we have been given a whole host of distinct yet wearable vintage couture fashion trends, and trends inspired by the antique, for the months ahead.

So, vintage haute couture fashion lovers, let's go back to the past and good old days of fashion and style. Back in time to the fashion design classics, when clothes 'maketh the man'!

WHAT DO THESE FASHION TERMS MEAN?

VINTAGE COUTURE

..........Originating from an era of the past, vintage haute couture fashion generally speaking, is clothing's which fall between the 1920's to 1980.

Those produced before the 20's is referred to as antique.

Retro, short for retrospective, usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era.

Couture clothing produced more recently is usually called modern or contemporary fashion.

The word vintage, derived from its use in the wine production technology, is more of a euphemism for 'old' clothes, but this fashion term assumes a more elegant meaning.

Most vintage couture have been previously worn. However, a small percentage, otherwise known as 'dead stock' or 'old-new stock' have never been worn. Still with their original tags, they have become quite valuable and are in more demand today.

Vintage couture clothing has become bigger than ever as we see more and more bygone styling coming onto the catwalks.

It 's a breath of fresh air for those of us fed up with the limited options that the high street provides and those of us who care about our environment.

HAUTE COUTURE

..........The term haute couture fashion, a French word meaning high-cut or tailoring, is the design and creation of custom-fitted fashions and designs of high taste.

It was originally a reference used to describe the works of Charles Frederick Worth which was first produced in Paris in the mid-19th century. It was a protected name, used by firms of high standard custom clothing. That is why it is expensive and made to order for specific clients.

Being the ultimate in luxury and pampering, it is the delight of only a few thousand women worldwide. This is due to the fact that it is exclusive and expensive.

Haute couture is made to order for a specific customer, and it is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finish, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques.

Nowadays, the term haute couture is used slightly loosely, and more often than it should be. It describes all high fashion custom fitted clothes, which can be produced, not only in Paris, France, but in other capital cities across the globe.

GO THE VINTAGE HAUTE COUTURE WAY

Old is now the new 'new', and it's wonderful that even high street stores now stock a line of vintage and vintage inspired garments and accessories.

Vintage haute couture fashion apparel and accessories are up fashion, high quality pieces of beauty. You get the stunning looks of the stars, or the eccentric style of the bold and daring.

Create your own style. Put together a great collection of items and pieces, and these must be of a certain theme. Mix-and-match them, or, simply collect as art.

Avoid going head-to-toe with any fashion era. Rather, use one or two key pieces of vintage couture, and pair it up with a high end modern couture shoe as shown here. Metals, leather, large bold beads, sequins and neon, and the timeless hats are all in.

Check out haute couture fashion styles from top indie, retro and vintage designers like Jefferey Campbell, Tulle, BB Dakota, Gentle Fawn, Stop Staring, and many more.

WORKS OF ART AND HISTORY

With vintage couture, you wear Art!

You get a high-priced designer fix and you satisfy your designer-itch by tactfully purchasing vintage items of clothing and accessories from reputable boutiques online and offline.

That way, you can beat the rough economic situation.

According to Harper magazine's spring hot list, they give tips on how to mix in their vintage counterparts in a way that’s trendy, rather than 'lost in time'.

Get your fur fix for less on the vintage scene, they say. "A beautiful fur can add instant glamour, whether over a cocktail mini or with ripped jeans and boots,” says Harper. Look to the 50's and 60's for the ones with the best craftsmanship and high quality.

For good savings, lets be environmentally friendly and go for faux fur. Put it all well together and it looks like the real thing.

Fringe dresses, tank style tops, and drop waist beaded numbers of the 20's, 40,s and 80's. are good to re-create on the cheap.

The labels you get from the department stores can be gotten for less at a vintage store, online or offline. Scour those second-hand shops for vintage finds, or failing that, cheat! Remove all the hard rummaging work by visiting an online vintage store, but be prepared to pay a slightly higher price. Also look out for vintage fairs which take place in all the major cities.

There are some wonderful vintage websites including MarthasCloset.co.uk, ElizabethsVintageCloset.co.uk, BibaLives.com, MyVintage.co.uk, Devoted2Vintage.co.uk, and CandySays.co.uk

CREATE YOUR OWN UNIQUE HAUTE COUTURE FASHION STYLE

To stand out from the crowd without looking like everyone else, you know, the mass production pieces, mix and match styles, you must create your own personal vintage haute couture style. Certain classic styles such as slouchy leather bags, off the shoulder, or, no shoulder minis and maxis, lace up boots and fabric shoes are always fashionable and are available in vintage options.

Avoid going head-to-toe with any fashion era. Rather, use one or two key piece vintage couture or accessory, and, pair it up with a modern piece, shoe or accessory.

A good example is pairing black or white jeans, with a solid chic vintage blazer and vintage look shoes. Or a sleeveless couture blouse, with tiny ornate buttons up to the throat, vintage fifties, over a mini pencil skirt, with a small back slit. Finished off with sleek boots.

Magazines, videos and online images can help serve as a guide when searching for vintage haute couture fashion, shoes and accessories.

  • Poetry in motion: The guerrilla wordsmiths bringing a literary touch to vintage chicIndependent9 hours ago

"Words have a magical power," says Kate Daudy, sitting in her kitchen, surrounded by the multicoloured swirls of poems that she has appliquéd across the walls. "If I walk down [west London's] Harrow Road and there's a great big poem by Lorca written down my back, the person on the bus who sees me might have a happy afternoon."

Historians Eve Faulkner and Maria Railton have connected their passions for fashion. The retired women say, deep down, they are just little girls who love to play dress-up. And if each had a chest full of dresses at the end of her bed, it would be full of Victorian-era decadence. The Victorian era was named after the United Kingdoms Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1937 to 1901. The two local ...
