Vintage Stockings
68History of Vintage Stockings
The first thing you'll probably want to know is what vintage stockings even are! A stocking is defined as a close fitting elastic garment that covers the feet and ends at the middle of the thighs. The typical vintage stocking is held up by a suspender belt.
There's a number of reasons why vintage stockings were popular back in the day (and why stockings are still popular today). The look, as you can see, is almost scandelous - the top of the thigh along with the butt is sexily exposed to be admired. The lack of cover on this area is also thought to heighten the sex appeal of the vintage stockings.
Also, you sweat less in stockings as opposed to pantyhose - let some air up there, huh? :) Plus it's definitely easy to go to the bathroom with less hassle, which makes it a great choice to pick up for parties.
Vintage nylon stockings were introduced in 1940 (before then, the material varied between silk and cottom). They were revealed at the World's Fair and well - to say that they caught on would be an understatement. Women actually fought to get their hands on a pair of nylon stockings to grace their legs with, and millions of pairs were sold. During World War 2, all nylon was diverted to the war effort, leaving many unhappy housewives stockingless.
All was well come 1945, though! While pantyhose is much more prevelent today, there are still plenty of vintage stocking lovers. I know I'm one of them!
