Virtual Photography 101
An easy way to start with virtual photography is through a simple to 3D-application such as Poser or Bryce.
These applications allow you to easily load in 3d-models, pose them, set up lighting, and take snapshots from different camera angles. I use Poser to generate all my virtual photographs. Poser also has some simple functionality of doing animations, so you can create video clips in addition to taking still virtual photographs.
Poser comes with a limited number of human figures, animal figures, and objects. When you first start Poser 7, you begin with the Simon male figure. Simon is in the T-pose, which is a stiff, arms horizontal, pose, that most 3d-models are saved in.
If you look to the right of the application, there should be a Libraries Menu. If this menu is not there, type Shift+Ctrl+b to toggle this menu on. You can also go to the Window drop down menu at the top-left of the application, and select the Libraries option.
Virtual Photography Step 1 - Pose
Once you have the Libraries menu up, you can start changing Simon's pose to something more interesting. Select the Poses folder in the Libraries menu, then drill down into the G2 folder, and the G2 male folder.
This should reveal a variety of pose categories including Action, Business, Conversation, etc. Go into the Action folder, then Fighting. This will reveal a set of actual poses. Click on these to change Simon's pose from the stiff T-pose to a variety of action fighting poses.
Virtual Photography Step 2 - Camera
Once you have chosen a pose that you like, you can enhance your virtual photograph by testing out a variety of camera angles.
This can be achieved by manipulating the camera menu on the top-left of the Poser application. The round controller at the bottom, allows you to rotate the scene. The cross controller above it allows you to zoom in, zoom out, and move the scene to the left or right.
The control above the cross consists of two colored hands and a face. Clicking on the face allows you to switch between a series of pre-defined camera views, including a front view, left view, right view, top view, face view, and hand view.
You can switch back to your original view by going to the Select Camera drop down menu at the top of the camera controls. Click on the Select Camera menu, and select the first entry, Main Camera, to switch back to your original view.
Virtual Photography Step 3 - Lighting
Once you have set up your camera, you can adjust the lighting of your scene. To do this, click on the Lights button on the Libraries menu. Remember that you can toggle the Libraries menu on and off by hitting Shift+Ctrl+b.
Click on the Light Sets folder, which should present you with a set of predefined lighting options. Test out the different light sets and select one that you like.
Virtual Photography Step 4 - Rendering
Now you are ready to snap your virtual photograph. You do this by clicking on the camera icon on the top-right of the figure window (i.e. the window with your virtual photograph).
Virtual Photography Content
The models that come with Poser 7 will only get you so far.

I think you will enjoy it. It is a lot of fun, although the $$ can start adding up. I am always very tempted to buy new figures, props, and backgrounds from Daz.
Yours look like fun. I do prefer real ones though :)
Hah, I'm too shy to wear some of those outfits. Also, I don't look as good in lipstick as you do! :)
I always wondered where you got your wonderful pictures
A real great Hub indeed. These characters are so life like! I mean it has things in such a great details, look at the hair; as if someones actual hair was flying in breeze and someone took a picture of it. I guess if someone can be master in this art then it can definitly become a very good career alternative. Is there some tutorial available for it? or some institute where they train people on these kinds of skills?
Hi packerpack, I am sorry it took me so long to reply. There are too many things to fit in to a 24 hour day <grin>. There are many art schools today that have courses on 3D modelling. I have a friend in this field who is very good, but it is extremely competitive, and difficult to make good money from it. As a hobby though, it can be very enjoyable.
Sorry from my side too for late reply. Actually I thought you will not reply at all but saw your reply on forum and that gave me the hint that you are still active and could be you have replyed here too and here you are!
Yes you are correct that it is competitive but nothing in the world is void of competition. Not now but definitely someday I will find myself in the field. Thanks for the reply
Good to hear from you packerpack. Yes I was away for a while - was sick and then got busy. I am going to try and visit HubPages more frequently now - it is a fun place to hang out :) Hope to see more of you!
This is something I knew absolutely nothing about! Thank you for the info and gorgeous pictures, you are so generous to share them.
Thanks RooBee. It is a lot of fun - much better than Barbie! :)
Downloading poser7 now :D
Sweet! It is a lot of fun. And Daz3D has some really great 3D models.
Hi, Aya_Hajime, this is a fascinating way to create images. How does it compare to Anime Studio, in terms of ease of use?
Hello Aya,
I have never tried Anime Studio before. As far as I know, Anime Studio is more of a 2D or 2.5D animation tool. It supports drawings, and does automatic tweening between drawn key-frames - i.e. it tries to automatically figure out how to animate from one drawing to another. I am not sure how well it works, given that this is a very difficult problem to do well.
Many people probably use Anime Studio to generate Flash content for websites.
Poser is a purely 3D tool and only works with 3D models. It also does automatic animations between key-frames. There are some issues with this as well, but probably less so than the 2D case.
Anyway, this is my limited understanding of these tools :) Which you want to use I think will depend on the type of look you want to achieve - drawn 2D cartoons vs. 3D-cartoons.
Again your images are magical !
Thank you very much Barry.
It is a very fun hobby. I am always very excited when I get new 3D models. I enjoy making the images as well as looking at them afterwards :)
Aya-chan, where are you? I miss you :(
Hello Misha - So good to see you. What have you been doing? - apart from making girls swoon :)
I will definitely have to try and get on more - but I think we need more cute men on HubPages. Invite your friends to join :)
