The New York Yankees are probably the most recognized team in Major League Baseball. With a glorious tradition and expectations of excellence, no other team can rival the men in pinstripes. Many of their players are household names: Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle and Jeter just to name a few. It goes without saying that a team so rich in tradition needs a ballpark that is equally as fitting.

The Old Yankee Stadium

The Old Yankee Stadium was built in the Bronx in 1923 with a seating capacity of 58,000. With an initial cost of two and a half million dollars, for forty years this stadium was home for a constant stream of champions.

In September of 1973 the stadium was closed so that it could be remodeled. It did not open until 1976 but the remodel was good for the Yankees as they won the World Series twice out of the next three years.

Time finally caught up with the old stadium and on September 21, 2008 the ballpark was closed for good. In 2009 the stadium and its tradition was demolished.

The New Yankee Stadium

The New Yankee Stadium is located northeast of the Old Yankee Stadium. At a cost of 1.5 billion dollars, it is the second most expensive stadium in the world. Construction began in August of 2006 but the first regular season game was not played until April 16, 2009.

By design, the New Yankee Stadium was built by incorporating many of the features of the old stadium. The exterior of the stadium resembles the original. Built of limestone, granite, and concrete, it holds 51,000 visitors.

The interior, like the exterior, was build using many of the features of the old stadium. The seats are laid out in a similar pattern as the old stadium and the trademark frieze feature is readily visible.

In order to capitalize on the Yankee history, many features are unique to the stadium.

“The Glory of the Yankees Photo Collection” captures the essence of the Yankee tradition. It has over 2,000 photographs and there are over 1,300 pictures throughout the facility.
Outside of the center field fence is Monument Park, an emotional trip back in time. Here there are the retired Yankee jersey number, plaques, and statues of former pinstripe stars.

Don't forget to see the Great Hall on the southern part of the field. There are banners of former Yankees and an almost 400' led ribbon.
