Traveling to wine regions or going on wine tours is a perfect way of increasing your skills in wine tasting and can be alot of fun. Most larger wine producers can be found in wine regions all over the world and offer tastings of their fine wines. Depending on the country or region, tasting at the winery may cost you a small fee, this is to cover the costs of the wine and is usually quite minimal.
Whenever traveling to an area where you might want to visit a vineyard or winery, call first to see when you might be able to visit. This prevents arriving at a time when you cannot be accommodated.Don't be alarmed once you get there! It is not considered rude to spit out wine at a winery, even in the presence of the wine maker or owner. Generally, a spittoon will be provided. In some regions of the world, wine tasters simply spit on the floor or onto gravel surrounding barrels. It is polite to inquire about where to spit before beginning wine tasting. Of course, if you've found a wine that you really enjoy, it's perfectly acceptable to drink it. Take caution, though, especially if your driving a vehicle.
There are many wineries around the world for you to explore. For many, wine tasting is a hobby that is greatly enjoyed. Wine enthusiasts will actually visit wineries and buy cases of a wine they truly enjoy. These wine enthusiasts or wine collectors will then store the wine in their wine cellar or a wine cooler so that it can be used for a special occasion. I lived in North Carolina, cradeled in the center of Maggie Valley, not far from Asheville, and Cherokee. The only thing that gave the beauty of the region a run for it's money were the wineries.
I had the distinct pleasure of tasting several vibrant and leggy wines that far exceeded in taste, color and nose than many expensive labels. (And didn't pay a dime for any of the samples I tried.)
The wineries in the region I have mentioned above run shops in some of the more touristy (I know thats probably not politically correct and all, but oh well, it's true.) areas. They want wine lovers to visit the shops where (generous for free!) samples are happily served by well educated individuals who in many cases have had a hand in creating the nectors they hand over with a smile. They are proud of their products, and well they should be. Upon leaving you may take your purchases and a map showing the place your wine was born, and how you can get there so you may stand on a wine lovers hallowed ground.
And in the fall, it makes for quite a romantic get away with a loved one. (Wink wink, nudge nudge to any out there trying to figure out a sweet place to get away to.)
Nice Hub. Thanks for the info.
