Jakarta's Seaside

North Jakarta is on the coast. The Java Sea is directly north of this district. North Jakarta is home to two important ports. There are several attractions related to North Jakarta’s position as the city’s coastal district. Aside from these, North Jakarta has all the trappings one comes too expect from a visit to Jakarta.

Ancol Jakarta Bay City is probably the main attraction in North Jakarta. Containing Sea World, a water park, an amusement park, a (crowded) beach, and both water and land-based sports, Ancol is, indeed, like a city. Sea World is interesting, but the crowds in the rest of the area make this expansive venue more of a stress inducer than anything else.

Menara Syahbandar is a 200-year-old lookout tower operated by the Jakarta Port Authority. There are some good views and the seemingly ancient buildings and canons are interesting.

Thousand Islands (actually, there are only about 100) are a group of islands located in the Java Sea. They can be reached via speedboat in under an hour. Ancol is the best place to come aboard these boats. Though some of these islands are crowded, they are a welco0me change of pace from hectic Jakarta. Guesthouses, hotels, and bungalows are available on many of the larger islands. It is possible to take a few days to relax on the beaches, partake in some water sports, and enjoy a bit of nightlife. Scuba diving enthusiasts will not be disappointed, especially with the diving sites near Pantara Islands. Inland trekking is possible on Sepa Island. Many of the islands are surprisingly family-friendly. Playgrounds and other children’s’ activities are widespread.

Back in North Jakarta, shopping malls like Kelapa Gading and Artha Gading offers fashion and food courts. The ubiquitous cinemas, western chain eateries, and pool halls can be found a few blocks from anywhere.

Dance spots like REM Club and Hailai offer a chance at a decent night out. Karaoke and bowling are also popular evening time activities.

It is also interesting to watch the activities of the port. Boats are coming and going at all times. Observing this, one can appreciate how Jakarta got its start and was able to grow into the mega-city that it is today.

North Jakarta is unique amongst Jakarta’s district because it is adjacent to the sea. This makes for some unique activities not possible in Jakarta’s inland districts. Also, visitors can truly appreciate the workings of this vast city.
