Pugs Are Ridiculously Cute

Temperament

Fun, stubborn, intelligent little couch potatoes great for people in small places. They adapt easily to whatever circumstances befall them, and enjoy a modest level of exercise and a minimum level of dog allergies. A go anywhere, do anything toy breed who will eat anything, they perform well at any task an owner could ask of them. Pugs are hardy and stocky, not at all like some of the finer boned toy breeds that will break bones at the drop of a hat. These guys are little bricks with hair, if you accidently step on one it hurts, but it’s not the end of the world.

Breed Issues

Prone to eye issues due to the size and placement of them, known for some hip issues and obesity, and for a short haired breed they are robust shedders, especially the fawns, due to their double coat.

Breed Clubs

Pug Dog Club of America, Pug Dog Genetic Registry of Canada, Pug Rescue.

Pure Bred Rescue

Pure bred puppies are expensive, and successful training of toy dog puppies usually takes at least about two years.  A taxing option at best, but if you can live without some of that nauseating puppy nonsense please consider adopting a shelter dog.  They are really great pet at a fraction of the cost, and they come already trained!  You should have no problems finding a rescue group in your state, and that is my favorite way to adopt a pure bred pet of any kind, and far from being less bonded to their owners, these guys know what it’s like to be homeless, and they appreciate their loving humans with zeal.

History

Found in pre-Christian China about 700 years before Christ, the Pug is one of the oldest breeds of pure bred dog.  They appeared in parts of Europe as early as the 15th century, and are not, as commonly thought, related to Bulldogs.  Popular with royalty in any country they appeared, fancies soon sprung up all over Europe and the Pug was officially inducted into the American Kennel Club in 1885.  Queen Victoria is credited to have made the Pug especially fashionable in the 19th century, and she bred several of her own.

Daily Care

Good things to keep in mind, Pugs can have difficulty keeping themselves cool in summer. They are an especially terrible dog to leave in a car in warm weather, they have trouble aspirating in 80 degree F or above weather. A weekly bath also will help the short coat with its shedding issues, and keep the dog from having serious dermises or dog skin allergies. Also, one of the number one problems plaguing Pugs is obesity. Studies have shown that dogs kept at good body condition as opposed to overweight dogs live 2 years longer on average, and have way fewer health problems later in life to boot. Plus it’s cheaper!
