Beginner Volleyball Drills

If you are a volleyball beginner or a new coach responsible for developing a bunch of enthusiatic volleyball newbies, searching for volleyball drills, make sure you read this.

The most important thing you need to focus on in the early stages is keeping it fun.The worst possible thing you could do is to focus on just drills, drills and drills like an army sargent. This will really turn players off and won't do your coaching reputation any good either. When people are having fun, they are also learning and as their skills improve, they will be more receptive to more discipline training and more complex and demanding practice drills.

So in the beginning, focus on the fundamental volleyball skills of passing, setting and serving and always finish a practice session with a fun game. Here are a couple of basic volleyball drills you can try out at your next practice session.

Passing Drill

Divide your players into two groups, these groups are going to have a friendly competition. Each group forms a ring and each has their own volleyball. The object of this drills is to see which team can keep their ball up the longest, that is how many continuous touches before the ball his the ground.

Start the teams with only setting the ball in the air. Initially, it will be hard for them to get many touches but as their skills improve, this will increase. Remember, the emphasis is making the drill fun so don't worry too much if their technique is not perfect.

To build on this, you can then ask the teams to dig the ball instead of setting or even alternate. For instance, a set and then a dig and then a set. Making the team call out each touch makes it more interesting but also teaches them to be comfortable calling out for the ball.

Serving Drill

Divide the group into two teams and again they will complete for the highest number of successful serves completed. The objective of this basic serving drill is to get players used to getting the ball over the net and into the court. It doesn't matter about strength or accuracy, just getting the ball into the court is the aim.

Have players take turns to serve and as each serve lands inside the court, the whole team has to callout the number of successful serves. This creates a bit of excitement as both teams can here the others count.

The coach can specify the type of serve to perform, e.g. underhand or overhand serve or it might be anykind of serve as long as it is in.

I would like to volunteer to coach a team of youngsters yet I am nervous about letting them down, or not having the right drills to actually give them something. All this information gives me knowledge, and confidence in teaching. You will have me as a repeat reader for a long time. Thank you very much.
