The Basics

Well, if anyone wants to get some exercise, have some fun, or just learn the sport, I can teach you. There are many components to this sport that some, even players themselves are unaware of.

Before I begin, id like to know if anyone plays on a team of their own.

Do you play on a volleyball team? If so, what level.

The Game

The first thing to know is there is 6 player on the volleyball court during a game.  The objective of the game is to have the volleyball hit the floor on the other side of the net.  One team must pass or spike the ball to the other side without carrying or throwing it over the net.

Rotations

The most important factor to this sport is without a doubt rotations. Since there are six people on the court, this can be confusing very easily, so look at each picture and read the explanation if you dont understand.

I will teach you the '5 to 1' rotation.

The Positions

Position:

1. The serving spot. Spot 1 is the person who will start the play by serving the ball to the other side. After this player serves the ball, he moves to the area where the 1 is on the picture.

2. Setters Spot. The designated setter of the team will reside in this position, however he wont stay there the whole game, if the team rotates, he will have to run to that spot in the beginning of every play. This spot is also known as Right, or sometimes Weak.

3. Middle front. This is 1 of the 2 common hitting, or spiking positions.

4. Left front. Also known as Outside, Power, or Left. The second most common hitting position, and in my opinion the most effective attack on the net.

5. Left Back. Welcome to...the back row.... Just Kidding, nothing special about this spot besides helping front row in passing some deep balls in the court

6. Middle Back. Just to help spots 1 and 5 cover the back half of the court.

These are the simple positions of the 6 players on the court, now to explain how a team will rotate on the court. Let me explain a scenario where a team will rotate. You and your team are just beginning a game, and the coin toss decided that the opposing team will serve first.

Lets just say that the serve goes into the net, and lands on the floor on the opposing side. Your team will earn a point, and will rotate. If it helps, whenever the opposing team serves, and your team scores a point, but only if the opposing team served that play. When your team rotates, they shift clockwise if you look at the picture. They do the opposite of what most people think, the player in position 1 will move to position 6, player 6 to 5, 5 to 4, and so on.

After the first rotation there is a situation where the setter is not in spot number 2. Heres how the game will have to play out, the setter will serve the ball, and immediately run to spot number 2, the middle hitter will immediately run to 3 and the outside hitter will immediately run to 4. But dont forget, there is another person in the front row. He cant stay outside, so he will run all the way to setter position to be a right side hitter. If you are going to be a right side hitter, you have to make sure you are out of the setters way, and back away from the net to pass to the setter. This way, there is no need to scramble into position for an approach. Just pass, call, approach and hit.

If the players rotate again, the setter will  be in spot 6, so while spot 1 is serving, the setter can push the person in spot 3 up to the net, and after the serve goes over, the setter can run to set, this is another scenario where there will be a right side hitter, but listen to this.  Before the serve, all players except the setter cannot move from their home position or overlap others, but as soon as the serve goes over, players can run anywhere they want in front row along the net, and everyone can exit the court and TEMPORARILY exit rotation to catch a stray ball.
