How to Volumize Hair - add volume to fine and flat hair

Is your hair flat and lifeless? Do you envy people with bounce and volume? Don't despair, it is possible to put more oomph in your hairstyle!

Tip #1 - Get Rid of the Gunk!

The first question to ask is - has your hair always been lacking in volume? A surprising number of people have good natural volume, but it's become completely flattened by the invisible residue from shampoos and mousses. Many shampoos and conditioners have polymers in them - plastic-like substances that coat each strand to make it shiny and smooth, but also weigh it down. In fact, volumizing products can be the worst culprits, because they have extra ingredients that coat each strand to make it thicker!

So your first step, before spending any money on new products or treatments, is to get rid of the build-up, and see what's really underneath! Clairol Herbal Essences have a Clarifying Shampoo which is very effective, but there are many other brands, too. Whichever shampoo you choose, lather twice, rinse well and see if your hair recovers its bounce.

You'll need to re-use your clarifying shampoo periodically, to prevent the build-up accumulating again. How often depends on how often you wash your hair and how many products you use on it.

Are you blowing the volume out?
Are you blowing the volume out?

Tip #2 - Sleep On It

Are you using your hairdryer and products correctly? Using too much mousse or gel, and/or bad drying technique can make your hair as flat as a pancake. We'll work on your technique next - but first, try this experiment:

Wash your hair just before you go to bed, towel dry it, and go to bed. Yes, it's OK to sleep with your hair wet, you're not going to catch pneumonia whatever your Mom said! If you're worried about getting your pillow wet, wrap a towel around your head.

Next morning, take a look at your hair (it's a good idea to do this on a day when you don't have to rush out the door, just in case...).

Is it is looking fresher and bouncier than usual? If it is, it's time to review how your drying method - because it looks like you're blow-drying the volume out rather than in!

I know some working mums who always wash their hair at night and let it dry on the pillow - it's a great timesaver and their hair looks great!

Blow Drying Technique

Tip #3 - Blow Dry for Volume

One common blow-drying mistake is that we don't dry our hair for long enough. If you stop blow-drying while there's still moisture in the hair, it will flop - no matter how much volume you've blown into it. If your arms are getting tired, you're more likely to give up too early - so follow the advice in this video, and get rid of at least half the water in your hair before you add product or start using a brush. A microfibre towel will get a lot more moisture out of your hair than a cotton one - then use the hairdryer to rough-dry all over your head, using your fingers to shake the moisture off the hair (you can hang your head forward if you like).

For a little extra insurance, when you think you've finished styling, give your whole head a quick once-over on the cool setting, then run your fingers through the roots - any lingering moisture will be more obvious once your hair is cool.

The other fact most people don't know is - hot hair won't hold a style. You can blow in all the volume you like, but if you stop without cooling the hair down, it won't last. So before you release each tress, hit the cool-shot button for a few seconds to cool and set it - if you don't have a cool-shot, hold the curl for a moment to let it cool (or get a new hairdryer!). Some hairdressers use two brushes, so they can leave one with the hair curled around it to cool down thoroughly while they move on to the next tress.

Personally, I always seem to be in a rush, so I always play it safe: after blow-drying, I catch my hair up in a clip on top of my head, to keep the roots lifted while I do my make-up. That way, if I haven't dried it properly, it will dry and cool naturally with lift rather than without.

Tip #4 - Rollers

Rollers are a boon if you're lacking in volume, because you won't be tempted to take shortcuts due to tiredness and you won't do your hair any harm by leaving them in place for longer than you think you need. So you can leave them in place till you're absolutely positive you're "cooked", without any concerns.

As with blow-drying, always rough-dry first before using rollers, removing at least 50% of the moisture from your hair.

If you use plain velcro rollers, sweep over them with a hot dryer. If you're using hot rollers, make sure you get them up to temperature before you put them in. In both cases, leave them in until you think your hair is completely cool - then allow another ten or fifteen minutes, just in case!

Tip #5 - Don't Wash Your Volume Down the Drain

Believe it or not, it is possible to wash your hair too much. Over-washing makes it flyaway and floppy (stylists prefer to do up-do's on hair that's been washed the day before, because it's too soft if it's just washed).

If you get a good lather on the first shampoo, don't lather again, whatever the bottle says - unless you are using a clarifying shampoo to clear build-up.

If you're currently washing your hair every day, try to cut back to every second day. On your non-shampoo day, don't just clamp a shower cap on your head in the shower - it'll flatten your hairdo totally! Instead, gather your hair up into a clip, comb or elastic band on top of your head before you shower (now you can put on that shower cap)! Leave the clip/band in place until you're ready to leave the bathroom, or the steam will undo your good work.

When choosing shampoo, be cautious about volumizing products. Volume is really about lift and bounce. If a volumizing product is going to coat your hair to make it thicker, it may also make it heavier, which means it will be harder to lift. If a volumizing shampoo doesn't make a big difference in the first few shampoos - toss it, use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any residue, and try something else.

Tip # 6 - Colour or Curl

If all these tips fail - or if they don't quite get you there - it's time to wheel out remedies that will need more maintenance - and involve more cost.

Colour is your friend. Colour causes the hairshaft to swell, so you literally end up with thicker hair. Because it penetrates rather than leaving a plastic coating on the surface, colour doesn't cause the same heaviness as volumizing mousses or gels.

It doesn't matter whether you choose a semi, a tone-on-tone or a permanent, home or salon. They'll all work. A good hairdresser can also create the illusion of volume with clever use of highlights and foils. If you don't want to change your colour, simply choose a shade that matches your natural hue.

A perm or body wave will solve all your volume problems forever - or rather, for six to twelve weeks, when you'll need to have it done again! However, if you don't want curls, you'll have to face the laborious task of blow-drying it straight after every wash. Old-fashioned perms can be hard on your hair, too, so do your research before you take the plunge.

Now you'll have no excuse to hide under that headscarf!

I color my hair each month to cover those old grays, I would love to go natural but my husband likes it colored. Very good information.

G-Ma - if you use a semi or a tone-on-tone, the more you wash the faster it will disappear. No way round it. However, the longer you delay shampooing just after you've coloured your hair, the longer it will last. So, say you might colour your hair on Friday night if you're planning a quiet weekend, and not shampoo it again till Monday. And never, ever shampoo it straight after the colour.

Another GREAT Hub Marisa!!

Plain talk on a subject that each of us faces each day!! I am blessed with a full head of dark blonde hair that hangs well below "where the sun doesn't shine!!" It is very fine and very straight!! Getting any kind of volume has always been a problem!!

I LOVE the feel of my hair when I lighten it because the lightener removes the build-up of product that shampooing does not as you noted above!! (Under Tip #5 I would add lighteners/highlighters as well!!)

I too put my hair up most of the time, especially when sleeping, and by morning I have lovely volume and waves!! Unfortunately, they last about 5 minutes!! On special occassions I use lots of products to keep the look but the stiffness is embarrassing when so many people want to touch it!!

If you have any suggestions about what products would produce BOTH volume-hold and softness, I am all ears!!

Again, a GREAT Hub Marisa!! Thank you sooooooooooo much for sharing!! I am off to wash my hair this very minute!!

Blessings, Earth Angel!!

Tips for oily hair - hot water and harsh chemicals stimulate the scalp, so always shampoo in warm to cool water with a mild shampoo. Wash your hair every other day, not daily, as that just stimulates the scalp to produce more oil. You can use a dry shampoo in between until your scalp settles down - which it will.

Earth Angel, when you wake with those gorgeous waves, do you clip your hair up until after you've showered? Steam is the enemy of volume. Unfortunately, with hair so long, the sheer weight of it would defeat most product.

Earth Angel  says:

Hi Marisa!! Thanks for the comments!! Yes, I keep my hair up in a bun, under a loose fitting shower cap, until after I shower and after my hair has had a chance to dry from whatever little moisture it picked up!! The steam really helps set the wave!! Alas, you are right, the weight is what defeats most products!! My hair dresser has encouraged me to cut in in layers many times but I have resisted!! If I didn't like the layers it would take another ten years to grow it out even again!! Soooooooo, I have invested in several really good wigs!! Thanks again for a GREAT Hub!! Blessings on your day and your hair-do's!! Earth Angel!!

Earth Angel - yes, I should have made that clearer. Steam is the enemy if your hair is hanging free, because it will make it flop. However it's an ally if you keep your hair up in rollers or a clip while you're in the steam, and leave it there till it's dry - because it will set the wave.

I agree with your hairdresser. Be brave! Do it gradually - the first time, insist that the very shortest layer is at shoulder-length. To an onlooker, they'll be invisible but it will really lighten the load. Better for your scalp, too.

Oh I am going to try this at the weekend, I've been after some more volume for a while. Is it true that colouring gets rid of the natural volume?

Marisa Wright profile image

Marisa Wright  says:

J Eds - if you have fine hair, colouring increases volume because it makes the hair shaft fatter. Unlike plasticised shampoos which make the shaft fatter by coating the outside, hair colours penetrate and fill the shaft - and for some reason, that doesn't weigh the hair down as much.

Marisa Wright profile image

Alexa, first of all make sure you're not rushing your hair drying - even a little moisture left in the hair will cause it to drop eventually - or if you're stopping while your hair is still hot,  the same will happen.

However if you're dancing in a hot club, perspiration can undo all your good work whatever you do - if that's the case, your only option may be a perm.

I have never read a hub on hair before but I agree with everything you've said, because it's TRUE! lol

Some ladies wash their hair EVERY day, THEN flat iron it and then wonder why it has more split ends than a straw broom!

I think the ONLY reason one would was it everyday is if it is super tres' awful oily - then I don't see any way around it. With dry hair every 4 to 5 days is fine IMO so long as I'm not at a campfire or the like - it looks just fine - shiny and very healthy and guess what? No Split Ends! No straw broom for moi.

Remember back in the day when CURLS were what were wanted, now those with those beautiful natural curls are wrecking their hair by making it straight.

Don't you just detest *designers*??

Marisa Wright profile image

Marisa Wright  says:

Privateye, I was dancing at a belly dance event on Saturday and one of the girls there was looking at the other women with envy as they wielded their hot rollers and curling tongs.  She has naturally curly hair and spent a fortune having it chemically straightened a few months ago.  Now, even if she would like to give it some volume or oomph on a special occasion, she can't.  It just hangs.  Straight.

Oh, and the daily washing for oily hair - it's a vicious circle. Washing your hair every day will make your hair even oilier.  The only thing to do is become a hermit for a week and NOT wash your hair at all.  That gives the sebaceous glands time to calm down so washing every other day becomes possible - which is much kinder to the hair.

Okay. what do you do to volumize and make my hair look healthy before I go to school. I only have an hour and 25 minutes to get to school and have to shower before bed. I want my hair to look REALLY good before school. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marisa Wright profile image

Marisa Wright  says:

Well, if you're showering before bed, you could wash your hair then too.  Depending on your hair, it may be enough just to towel dry it and go to sleep.  If it's long, you could put it in a ponytail (or plaits, if you want a wave).

It may not sit exactly the way you want when you wake up, but it will be much quicker to wet small sections and re-dry them the right way than to wash your whole hair in the morning.

Washing your hair too often, even just everyday will strip the natural oils that you hair needs. Then pair that with straighteners and harch products and it's a wonder that most women's hari doesn't fall out. You did a great job on this hub!

i have oily thin hair && oily skin, so its embarassing for me to skip a shower. I wash my hair everyday. Is there a way to help my oily hair (other than using dry shampoo?)

Marisa Wright profile image

Marisa Wright  says:

Lalala, I'm not suggesting you skip a shower - just that you don't wash your hair every time you shower. Wear a shower cap to keep your hair dry. If you have a fringe, you could wash just the fringe.

You really do need to give your hair a rest - if you keep washing it every day, you will stay in the same vicious circle: the more you wash it, the more it will need washing.

If you're a girl, getting a hair color and/or a perm will give your hair more body and make the oiliness less obvious.

Rhonda  says:

My hair is fine and thin. I have it highlighted about every two months, which gives it body, and I wash, blow dry and use a hot curling iron every day. The ends are so dry, but if I condition the roots, it becomes flat and lifeless. If I don't use the hot curling iron daily, I'm left with the frizzies. What should I do?

Marisa Wright profile image

Marisa Wright  says:

Rhonda, once again the secret is in not washing and blow drying every day. Blow drying every day is very tough on hair, and even an "everday" shampoo or one for dry or colored hair will make dryness worse - especially combined with a curling iron!

If you're blow drying every day, you should be using a protective balm or mousse, but that's going to make your hair flat too - so avoiding blowdrying at all is the best bet.

Volume from a good blow dry should last more than a day, especially if you tie your hair up in the shower.

You can get dry shampoo in an aerosol - spray it on, leave it for a few minutes then brush out. I've heard some people suggest using talc or fine oatmeal, but if you have dark hair like me, it's very hard to brush it out.

You could try washing your hair with plain water (no shampoo) every other day, so you can blow dry it. Just make sure you aren't using really hot water when you wash your hair, that will make it worse.
