Moms, You Have to Do the Work

Do the work. It seems like a very simple, and obvious phrase. Yet, it's something I find myself saying time and time again to work at home mothers who can't understand why they're not finding success.

If the work isn't done, then success won't be found. Again, this seems very straight forward and to the point. Why is something that is so obvious to some, so difficult to grasp by others. Here are some theories:

  • You're having trouble managing your schedule
  • You're not being honest about your limitations
  • There are health issues causing you to step away from your career
  • You're not communicating your career-related needs to your family
  • You don't really want to work from home

Take a step back and really analyze what you're doing. Ask yourself the following questions and be as honest as you possibly can:

  • Are you following the career path that makes you feel the most fulfilled and gratified?
  • Do you need to reach out to others for help organizing, and managing your time?
  • Is a support system in place for when you feel you're slipping?
  • Did you make this decision to be a work from home mother because you wanted to, or because you felt is was something you had to do?
  • Are you sure you want to work from home?

Without a boss leaning over your shoulder on a daily basis, it's difficult to stay dedicated, committed, and disciplined throughout the workday. This is a reality work at home professionals across the globe face on a daily basis. You will be your own boss. You will be holding yourself accountable for your success or failure in your professional life. You will be handling payroll, supply orders, and all office duties related to your work.

Grasping these realities, and being honest with yourself are the keys to knowing if you're on the right track or not. Remember; be straight with yourself about your career choice, if you need help, and if you need to utilize tools to keep things in order. Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for help. And, above all, do the work.
