I joined Hub Pages over eight months ago and I enjoyed it thoroughly! I saw a writing community that supported one another and felt that it was a community that I would enjoy being a part of. So I joined!

Let me say right at the bat; I still enjoy being a part of the community however recently I have seen some things in our community that out right enrages me.

Huber’s are slandering each other to a point some writers feel that they have been personally attacked and yet others stop their dreams of being a writer.

In the forums it is all out war. The religious area is nothing but hate and slander and yet other areas are used to judge one another hurling insults when the opportunity arises.

Huber’s from all parts of the world sometimes fear publishing their articles fearing an outright personal attack on their work!

Sure I accept if a reader comes across my articles that may not like or agree with it but this does not give them the right to attack the work that I have written?

Each writer is an individual and no one person shares the same thoughts or ideas 100% of the time! That is what makes writing on Hub Pages so fun and unique. On Hub Pages you can always read an open variety of subjects and honest opinions.

What one writer writes about you can go to the next Huber and see another view point on the same subject!

Why do we have to personalize the Huber’s on hub pages more than likely we will not meet our fellow Huber nor will we have a one on one relationship with each other!

The meaning of a community is: A body of people living or working together following the same purpose or rules.

I believe we have lost this purpose and as a community we need to stand back up and have some integrity about ourselves as a community and as an individual writer!

Let us be dedicated in helping one another out and not hurting our fellow Huber!!

Thanks

I agree Matthew this isn't right. I have decided to stay away from the forums for the very reason you write. I have had more than a lot of help here making me a better author. I owe Hub more than I can say but with things as they are I hesitate recommending anyone new to come to hub. The nastiness must stop. We need to get back to being helpful and thoughtful towards one another's work on Hub.

I rarely visit the forums and when I do it is really to find an answer to a question.

You are right though I do get the odd nasty attack about some of the things I write. Funnily enough the attacker has usually not actually read what I have written. Criticism is fine, I can take any amount.

You write a lot about the Christian religion. I am not a Christian and totally accept you have the right to write about what you believe in. At the same time I believe that the Muslims do too, and the Wicca and whoever. Religion really does have to be an agree to disagree area. It does no-one any good to preach religion in a comment. Waste of time with me, it would be like banging a head against a brick wall. Religion interests me but not as a search for God. I found my Gods a long time ago and I condemn no-one but the zealots and fanatics of any religion. Good luck to you Mdawson17.

Good words. I have entered into Forumn discussions that asked serious questions thinking we'd have a reasoned dialog. I soon discover that in almost every case it rapidly became childish attack one-liners or outright vitriol.

Nowadays if I happen to see a question when it is first asked & can provide my honest assessment opinion, I do so, but then when it disintegrates into idiotic nonsense I simply withdraw.

It is too bad, but that is the way it is. Thanks for writing this Hub.

I too stay away from the forums for the reasons stated. While I keep checking in on them from time to time (often for questions I have) I rarely comment. It seems on some of the forums the thread , no matter what the topic, will often degenerate into something else. Yet I like this community and am grateful for having learned much.

It seems as though the only way to not get hurt on Hubpages is to not visit the forum. That seems pretty ironic since the only time I also visit it is for help to a question. I have always had pretty positive comments. But, I also don't venture into touchy subjects much. Hasn't all these mean commentors parents told them. "If you don't have anything nice to say. Don't say anything at all." I'm all for different opinions but, their is no reason to be mean. My highest ranking hub was about survey sites that I recommend and have made decent money on pretty easily. It was fine for well over 8 months or so until it got flagged by someone and I now realize it was apparently against the Google Adsense rules somewhere in the fine print. I'm disappointed that someone obviously flagged it even though I had such great comments of people thanking me. I bet they had a competing Hub because there are many others about similar sites on here that have not been flagged.

Interesting hub, mdawson! Like the people who have already commented, I tend to stay away from forums wherever they are. I've been involved in several online businesses and affiliate programs that include forums where people are encouraged to ask questions and share information to help one another. What often happens, however, is that some people end up doing a lot of complaining and attacking. I'm sorry to hear that this is happening on HubPages.

Part of it may be because the Internet is so anonymous; in other words, you aren't addressing people face to face, so it makes it a little easier to say some things that you wouldn't normally say, or say it in an off-putting or offensive manner.

Another problem with online communicating is that a lot of nonverbal communication cues are lost (e.g., facial expression, body language, tone of voice), so sometimes people will misinterpret what is written, think they are being attacked, and respond accordingly. Believe me, I've been there and done that :-).

So, if I think I'm being attacked, I will often not respond immediately, in the heat of the moment. I'll wait a few minutes, a few hours, or even a few days, give myself time to calm down, and then respond as diplomatically as I can, making sure first that I haven't misinterpreted anything. People who attack are often hurting on some level, can't strike out at the source of the pain, and misdirect the aggression to someone else. So I try to take that into consideration and try not to take it personally (easier said than done sometimes).

What I'm going to try to do here is focus on the things I love about HubPages and either not pay attention to the negativity or, if it's in my face, respond with love as best I can.

I have to agree. I too have seen the relentless attacks on Christian beliefs, so uncalled for. I try not to debate, but answer in positive open ended questions. It's the only way to deal with it.

well there are certain people who should not be allowed on there ever in my opinion. Rude ignorant people, that keep the religious kind caring people away, that is life my friend, nobody seems to have any control, i juat ignore silly comments, and limit myself to the forums altogether, in can be a waste of time.....
