WAYS TO CLEAN YOUR TOOTHBRUSH

EVERY MORNING STARTS THE SAME---

You stumble into the bathroom, grab your toothbrush and the toothpaste and brush away. When you're finished, you rinse under the running water tap, shake it off and, most likely, plop it into the cup waiting there on the sink edge and head off for your day.

But there on your toothbrush, thousands and thousands of germs and bacteria are kicking into high gear and multipling like crazy in preparation for the next time you use it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, "Even after being visibly rinsed clean, toothbrushes can remain contaminated with potentially pathogenic organisms."

Yuck! Yuck! Yuck!

Here are some ways to get your toothbrush clean at home.

THE ALCOHOL SOLUTION

TRY--Use at least 70% strength rubbing alcohol to water. Change the solution every 3-4 days.

CONCLUSION--Must have 1 cup per brush sitting somewhere on your cabinet or sink at all times (cross your fingers one of the kids or hubby doesn't knock it over). When ready to use, the brush must be thoroughly rinsed under hot water for several minutes or it will taste of the alcohol. This will be something you (Mom) will end up doing every morning because the kids "just can't seem to do it right". Also the solution must be changed on schedule or it becomes ineffective.

Alcohol is cheap, no argument there. But you do have to run the hot water for several moments to rinse before use and that equals cost by a higher water bill, a higher sewer bill, higher energy bill (heating the water) plus using extra water resources.

THE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE SOLUTION

TRY--Hydrogen peroxide to soak your toothbrush clean. The solution must be changed every 3-4 days or when cloudy.

CONCLUSION--Again you must have 1-cup and brush per person for the best sanitation and that means several cups sitting out on your cabinet. You must really, really rinse the brush well before using. The peroxide has a horrible taste and smell. Again, you have gobs of water running down the drain which will raise the water bill higher.

THE ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP SOLUTION

TRY--Rinse your toothbrush with water and antibacterial liquid soap. Scrub the bristles with your finger or thumb until you feel they are clean. Rinse and use.

CONCLUSION--Ever had your mouth washed out with soap when you were a kid? Well, that memory will come rushing back if you fail to get all the soap out of the bristles. Trust me! Also, "scrubbing" with your finger produces a mass of splatters all over the countertop and walls. Have a kid (or husband) do this and you'll have to spend at least 15 minutes wiping down surrounding surfaces each time they brush. Who has that kind of extra time?

THE DISHWASHER OR WASHING MACHINE SOLUTION

TRY--Put your toothbrush in the dishwasher or the washing machine.

CONCLUSION--I don't know how you feel but the thought of bits of teeny, tiny food particles from my pots and pans and other peoples dirty dishes getting slung into the bristles of my toothbrush just about makes me sick. Worse yet, the thought of my toothbrush swimming around with particles from dirty underpants and socks in the washing machine really makes me want to gag! Dirty is dirty and things can get just so clean without some extra help! I'm not putting my clean underwear in my mouth because I don't think they ever get "brand-new clean" once used so why would my toothbrush fair any better?

SO WHAT'S THE BEST THING TO DO?

The very best way I've found to clean my family's toothbrushes it to STEAM CLEAN them. There are many products on the market today that will do this, but the one I like the best (and have been using for a couple of years now) and think does the best job is the GERM TERMINATOR.

It generates a continuous burst of steam that wipes out more than 99.9999% of all germs and bacteria on your brush. Another plus--your brushes are stored in a sanitized container until the next time you're ready to use them. No contamination from dust, outside sources or poop-type stuff floating in the air!

No muss! No fuss! Just nice clean, sanitized germ and bacteria free toothbrushes!!

  • KNOW WHAT YOUR PUTTING IN YOUR MOUTH!

Do you have any idea what your putting in your mouth when you brush your teeth? How about thousands and thousands of germs and bacteria, dust and dander and the worse yet--fecal matter that is floating in the air up to 2 hours after you flush. Talk about a potty mouth!! Check out this lens now and find out more!! Thanks--Babykitty - 2 years ago

Great ideas - most of us forget to clean that little brush we put trustingly into our mouths every day! I once did a bacterial culture on my toothbrush when I used to work in a hospital lab - the results convinced me to use preoxide to keep the toothbrush clean!

I know what you mean. Sometimes I think we might be better off not knowing what's going on! Then on the other hand---we need to stay ahead of the germs to stay healthy!!

Thanks for coming by!!

One other note is this: you can become very ill from bacteria in your mouth. The gums are not a very good seal against bacterial intrustion into the blood stream, so keeping a toothbrush clean is also a matter of staving off infections.

Great hub - I hope others learn from it as well!

Chef, right again!! Another thing to be careful of is brushing to hard and brushing with an old brush. Cuts the gums and lets bacteria into the blood.

Oh--when you open a new toothbrush package be sure to clean the brush before you use it. Studies have shown that even the new ones are loaded with germs!!

Ruthie--where did you find that cat ROTFL--Dare I admit that I use cheap plastic toothbrushes and throw them aaway after about a month of use and one of the thing I always do if I've had a cold is to throw away my old toothbrush and open up a new one. Maybe I should get a bottle of peroxide instead

robie--Just remember what I told Chef earlier--even the brand new toothbrushes are contaminated and need to be cleaned before using.

I'm looking for cat pictures all the time---my husband swears I have more pictures saved for later use than anything else in my computer!!

Thanks for stopping by!

Decrescendo--It wasn't until I found a site by accident that spoke about the health hazards of the common toothbrush that I realized what we are dealing with in the way of germs and bacteria on something we use everyday. They can be pretty nasty!

Thanks for stopping by!

Great hub! I'd like to add that this goes for dog's mouths too. Swallowing all that bacteria is so bad for them. If you can use a little hydrogen peroxide on a towel and just rub your dogs teeth with it from time to time, it's a huge help. But the big thing is, when your vet recommends a dentistry, DO IT. Hey, this goes for the kitties too! It really is that important.

I like the idea of soaking your tooth brush in a cleaning solution. I have no idea why I've never done that. I floss after every single meal, I'm totally into caring for my teeth in a big way. Thanks for the tips!

Veronica---I agree 100% about caring for our pets teeth as well as our own. Most people just never think about cleaning a toothbrush--it's just there and taken for granted.

Thanks for coming by!!

JUST FOR LAUGHS!

Dentists can be frustrating. You wait a month-and-a-half for an appointment, and they say, "I wish you'd come to me sooner."
