We Must stop our Children Killing Themselves
67ON THE ROAD. Perhaps 10 people dead on Autralia roads overnight Friday
Whilst driving from point A to point B this morning II listened to this conversation
There was some heated discussion between the Radio announcer and a listener,
HOW BEST TO PREVENT young people from killing themselves.
I came into the conversation where the listener stated
The Authorities namely:-
The NSW GOVERNMENT Should MAKE ANY UNDEDAGE PERSON CULPABLE FOR BEING in that condition. This of course would require a new law to be bought down. (We all know there are no under age drinkers or for that matter an under age drinker, that would dream of driving a motor car)
The Listener’s SOLUTION
‘DELAY THE EFFECT OF ACHIEVING THEIR DRIVER’S LICENSE FOR ANOTHER YEAR AFTER THEY REACH DRIVING AGE.
If the person is ten years of old, instead of achieving their license when they were 18 years of age.(Normal Age in NSW) They the underage drinker or driver would have to wait until they were nineteen years of age. That mean this alleged ten year old would not be able to get the license until nineteen years of age.
I appreciate your feelings; this 10 year old child was not in a car or even near one far less driving one. Somehow the young person was able to imbibe so some one must have fed the alcohol to that young person. At least allowed access for that young person to drink.
The announcer was disturbed on the basis it would be to hard to police or monitor. I did not think laws by Government were based on too hard to monitor by the police, to be of any use. From the days of Robin Hood or Jesse James, the police made laws to prevent their crimes. The said laws were only able to be used on the alleged criminal being apprehended. May be after the said effect of that law might have given pause to the person who defied the law, to think again.
I would assume any 10 to 14 year old having to wait an extra year before obtaining a license, that person would offer advice to any friends. ‘Don’t do that the penalty is too much. For another year you will not be able to drive.’
The announcer closed the conversation by ‘Saying the person who drink and drive cars should have their cars confiscated and crushed.’
There is another part to young people being killed on the roads in cars. This speed for young people being killed is increased by overloading the car with passengers. In NSW in the last six weeks we have had five car accidents leading to multiple deaths. WHY?
Facts: -
They were in the age group of 17 to 20
The cars were carrying too many passengers
Speed was involved.
These persons were celebrating the end of year exams.
Only one person was driving, the others were passengers of mixed ages and sex.
They were our Sons and Daughters.
In some cases there was no alcohol involved some a lot.
Why does Dad or Mum let an inexperience driver take their car to a night out where there is a crowd, alcohol excitement, the ability to show off, offering a friend a lift home/
Who knows the answer?
May be you all do, PLEASE adjudicate and tell me your answers and feelings in response to this HUB.
Many years ago my nineteen year old brother was killed by a hit and run drunken driver.
Not as many years ago my 17 year old niece was killed in a car accident of inexperience and too many people in the Car. She was in the backseat.
CAN YOU IMAGINE THE DEVASTAION VISITED ON THE PARENTS AND OTHER RELATIVES?
Lets all decide to prevent this devastation as much as we can.
PLEASE OFFER YOUR OPINIONS.
We may be their last chance to prevent the death our of Daughters and Sons from being killed
WE MUST STOP OUR CHILDREN
KILLING THEMSELVES
ON THE ROAD.

Yes,school going children are not allowed to come by vehicles in my city, only school bus, bycyle,or dropped by parents, but some do still not obey the rules, and as a result there are accidents happening.
I think we're just as bad or worse over here. About a year ago a car full of like 12 kids hit a tree at 4 in the morning in Oswego, IL. 4 or 5 high school kids died and now they have crosses marking the spot. I drive past it all the time.
Great hub, very important issue, parents should teach the kids to be more responsible and show them that accidents have happened in the past, maybe they will learn.
Worth Reading your hub friend. Thumbs up.

Thank you ALL.
Now could you ALL put your other hat on please, it is great you commented on Frank,s hub, sorry MrMarmalade, NOW imagine you are part of a very large
THINK TANK:
We have been charged with Solving this matter of Young PEOPLE DYING on the ROAD. WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO AS A COLLECTIVE VOICE?
I AM POSITIVE THAT COLLECTIVELY WE WILL FIND SOMETHING TO GO TO OUR RESPECTIVE GOVERNMENTS TO DEBATE ON. iF WE GIVE THE WEAPONS, THEY CAN EARN THEIR PAY AND OUR RESPECT.
THANK YOU ONE AND ALL.
pLEASE HELP?
MrMarmalade, my heart goes out to you. I have 2 teenage children who are new on the road; a son 19, and daughter 18. I worry about them both when they are out with their friends. I'm sure I don't always know where they are. I talk alot to them about the danger of teenage drinking and driving. I tell them stories that I hear on the news and talk about personal responsibility when they are behind the wheel. I just shared your story with my daughter to keep enforcing the learning. Whether they fully listen or not, I keep right on planting the seeds. One thing my son said to me that he didn't understand was why does his friend Michael's father keep buying Michael a car (3 of them) when he has totaled 2 cars and flipped oneof them over from stunt driving in a field. He asked me, what is Michael's father thinking? Why would he do that? I said good question, what do you think? My son said, I think his father is stupid! So my point here is "do we buy our children too much? Shouldn't they earn what they want by working for it so they can learn to appreciate and value what they have"? I could write a lot more about this but will keep it as a comment. Good Hub. Dottie
Hear!Hear! Just last week here in our city four Ladies aged from 72 to 81 were leaving a church function at 9:30 in the evening on the way home their car was struck head-on by a car driven by a 42 year old. He's had his drivers licence for many years and still he was driving DRUNK. He's deprived these nice ladies of their last years. These Ladies had children and granchildren and one of them even great-grandchildren who now won't have their Gramma or Nanas anymore because a DRUNK killed them. I don't have any problem of anyone having alcoholic drinks, as a matter of fact I will have some too but....... it matters not at all how old the drunk killer is.......he is a Killer who was drinking and driving......I honestly believe that the crime of drunk driving with fatal concequences is just as common in older drivers than young.....the older one should know better because he is after all an adult...
MrMarmalade very great HUB thought invoking

On The news in Sydney, THE GOVERNMENT (NSW)Have changed the Law as 1st January 2008. This is about HOON drivers. For those who do not understand Australian talk. Is a person male or female who do wheelies out on the open road. We have over the last year have had a lot of deaths, because of this.
As to why Father's give big fast cars to children.
I HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT TO DAD THIS IS A STATUS SYMBOL. STUPID AND RIDICULOUS.WILL THEY OR WERE THEY SO COMPLACENT WHEN THEY ARE KILLED COMING HOME. SELFISH DAD STUPID DAD
MrMarmalade Sorry my comment showed up twice somehow, please deny one of them
thanks Zsuzsy
Gee I notice that and I do it myself.
Did not know how to get rid of them
Thanks for teaching me
I had already accepted them, so too late will know what to do next time
An important issue, and a good debate in the comments section.
hi great hub and also a very important issue
The sad truth about any young person is that laws don’t affect the decisions they make. They feel that they are invincible and will live forever so to pass a law that would add a year to the age that they are able to receive their license would never even cross their minds when they chose to have that drink. Start holding their parents responsible for their actions and I am sure that the leash would tighten up though.
I know of one way to make it tougher. They make a device called a BRIAD they sometimes install for multiple DUI offenders over here. It makes the driver blow into a machine before the car will start. It might be expensive but if they made it mandatory it would be much tougher to drink and drive for teens and all alike.
That is a great solution, we are talking long term
Thanks for your effort. Please do some more?
Good hub Mr. M - Sadly, in my experience, governments only act in their own best interests, rarely in the interests of their citizens - but good luck in your quest.
Thank you for your words
I don’t think any more laws are needed. More, I think the majority of traffic laws in their current versions should be retired. Including drunk driving laws, too.
What is needed in case of teen drivers is common sense in parents, and willingness of parents to spend time on their teens. No law can substitute for this.
PS while I'm really interested in the topic, your hub was very hard for me to read. I would appreciate you stop using all caps (in online word caps are equivalent to shouting).
I appreciate your comments. Lack of knowledge on my part.
Thank you
I agree 100% with Misha.
We went through this phase in our life when our sons were in their teens and during a particular phase were away from home in their colleges and University.
Long distance parenting was a serious problem we had to handle.
Hard to read at times because this is a subject close to me. I don't think we need more laws. Changing people's behavior is the hardest thing. Knowing about AIDS doesn't stop people from having unsafe sex . . .
I have learnt, as every day is a new day.
No more capital letters
Last night I saw on VH1 classics an interview with Beatle John Lennon. When he was 16 yrs. old his mother was killed by an off duty drunken police officer. "Stupid Pig" and "Stupid Mark David Chapman".
