WEST COAST EAGLES V FREMANTLE DOCKERS AND GOOD V BAD FENG SHUI
59WEST COAST EAGLES AND FREMANTLE DOCKERS...a quick background
To those of you who live outside of Australia, the Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles are both Australian Rules Football teams playing in the A FL national league.
Both teams are based in Perth, Western Australia and have a formidable cross town rivalry . The league was formally the VFL or Victorian Football League based out of Melbourne but went National in the late 80's.
Being the home state of many great players Western Australia became the home of the West Coast Eagles. Success soon followed and the club have so far 3 Premiership titles to their name and it has taken only 20 years.
The Fremantle Dockers began a few years later and to date have an abismal record but show alot of promise. As the saying goes...they promise the world but deliver an atlas !
I live in Perth but support neither team...AFL isn't my game but I enjoy watching it and kicking a ball around in the park. Being brought up on a diet of Rugby Union this is a completely unbiased opinion so take it for what its worth.
Sports psychology is the difference between winning and losing. How many times have Manchester United scored in the final minute to get an undeserved draw or a win. They have a winning psyche. It creates their opportunities and their results.
So where does Feng Sshui come into it?There are parts of the world where whole stadiums are deisgned on Feng Shui. Huge office buildings but also logos and symbols. The West Coast Eagles are currently rebuildingafter celebrating their success a bit too much! They had a poor season in 2008 after losing some of the best players in the competition for various reasons.. There symbol is a winner, the most highly evolved bird of prey. They are nearly always soaring to lofty heights on the ladder and are never down and out for long.
The Fremantle Dockers who I saw a couple of live games in 2008 spent the most of the season losing by the smallest of margins. Even against the best teams they somehow managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory! They had an experienced team , maybe a bit too much age and weren't rebuilding. A few extra points and they would have had a successful season BUT they didn't !
How can you breed success when you have a damn Anchor plastered all over you ?? It symbolises DOWN ! Why not cut to the chase and just advertise a shipwreck ??Everytime anyone looks at them what are the first thoughts ? First impressions ? Clearly not a submariners social team but then they do have the anchor...maybe the Navy is in town after all...lock away the women and children! Sorry, digressed a bit there. Nice colours though , but what a symbol. Your thoughts tend to create your reality and I really think that the Fremantle Dockers Marketing Guru needs to start refunding a bit of that money back to his client. Your symbol/logo is how the club is perceived. Not just by the fans but by everyone. There must be something better out there than an Anchor...something more uplifting.
Maybe if they had the Sheep Carrier or livestock ship on the jerseys then they would pick up a massivefollowing of New Zealanders and Tasmanians ?! Not as stupid as it sounds...neither is represented in the AFL .
A comment from a national sportsnews reader said it all on Monday. "My parents follow the Eagles and they are looking at another Premiership in a couple of years...I myself am a Dockers fan and am resigned to the fact that we wont win any titles for at least the next 125 years !
I dont know much about AFL but a new logo overhaul would be worth a look Dockers. No guys, not those KKK outfits that you have been parading around in for a bit of unwanted publicity.Pull up that damn Anchor and set sail for a season of success .
Any comments on sports teams and losing/ winning images would be greatly appreciated. Enter them in the comments section. Go the LIONS ! Cheers !
UPDATE 10 MAY
To their credit the Dockers have won 3 in a row since I wrote the article. Obviously being condemned in front of a national audience has contributed to their success. The season is far from over...and good luck to n=both teams.
