WHAT KIND OF DOG SHOULD I GET?

Owning a pet is not something to take lightly. It's almost like having a child. They need love, attention, shelter, food, and medical care just as we do. Before making a decision to become a dog owner, you first must decide which breed right for you.

Do you want a robust, masculine guard dog, or cute tiny little one that you can put in a Louis Vuitton carrier and show off like a trophy. In either case, you first must know that your dog must should share your personality. Yes, YOUR personality. If you're a couch potato, you don't want a pet that is super active. On the other hand, if you are looking for a partner to jog in the park, you may not be interested in a lap dog.

While there are many breeds available, I will give you a few with distinct characteristics that may or may not be suitable for you.

Labrador Retrievers: Average height is from 21-25 inches. Average weight is 55-90 pounds

This breed is considered a large breed. They are normally big eaters, which means ($$) on food. They love the water and outdoors and frequent exercise is needed. They are eager to please and have above average intelligence. Labradors are very good with children and easy to train. They are not normally aggressive with other pets.

Rottweiler: Average height is 22-24 inches. Average weight 85-116 pounds

This breed is considered a large breed. They are normally masculine animals with require firm handling and training early on. They are loyal and protective, but with proper socialization, will lay around and let the little ones do as the please without a care in the world. On the other hand, they will defend their loved-ones to the end. It is very important to start training early. The myth that these are vicious animals is just that "a myth." As with any animal, you mold them and train them into what you want them to be.

As I mentioned, it's important to pick an animal that matches your personality.....need I say more.

Lhasa Apso: Average height 10-11 inches. Average weight 13 - 15 pounds.

These are cute little feisty dogs that are surprisingly good guard dogs. They are very aware of their surroundings and don't take kindly to strangers. These dogs do very well with apartment living, although they do need daily walks to stay active. These cute little creatures are known to develop kidney problems and they must be brushed frequently to avoid their coats from matting. Some people like to have them professionally groomed - and they just look so cute with their little bows in their hair.

Pit Bull Terrier: Average height 18-22 inches. Average weight 22-130 pounds.

If you've ever heard the name, you've probably associated it with vicious, fighting to the death dogs. These are very dominant dogs and require a dominant owner. Their humongous necks, their big heads, and their short stocky muscular bodies make them what they are, leaders. Their ears are normally cropped and tail cropping is are optional, although this is not allowed for some show dogs. They do require exercise on a regular basis and early socialization and training, will make them loyal and obedient. They do have a tendency to chew things if left alone for long periods of time. These dogs are very eager to please and super protective of their family and their property. This breed has been has been given a bad rap, in my opinion. Although they are a bit more aggressive by nature, it's the owners that train them.

As with any pet, they are what you make them. If you are loving and caring towards them, that's what you will get in return. On the other hand, if you are cruel and harsh, you will be creating a monster.

These are just a few breeds and their characteristics. There are many other factors to consider before deciding to get a pet such as, should you get a puppy or an older dog - from a licensed breeder - a classified ad - or your friend's brother.... It is best to get your pet from a reputable person. If you choose to purchase from a private ad or through word of mouth, it is important to make sure that the parents are healthy, they have a good temperament, and always get something in writing in case your new puppy has undisclosed health problems.

Many times unlicensed breeders or "puppy mills" are in it for the MONEY ONLY. This often results in inbreed animals with illnesses or defects that you are not aware of until after you've finished your transaction.

Another good place to find animals of www.petfinder.com. Here you can find just about any breed you desire. They are comprised of animal shelters, rescue groups, and other associations. Too many times animals have to be euthanized because there is not room or enough funding to take care of them. This is always a good option if you are looking for an older dog, or even a mixed breed.

There are many things to consider, so take your time, do your research, and find that perfect match for you and your family. While being a pet owner is a tremendous amount of work, it is equally rewarding when you see a tail wagging, or your pet running to greet you when you come home.

I personally am partial to Rotties and this is my reason why....my baby China. Yes, my baby all 91 pounds of her...
