WHAT TO DO IF YOU FORGET A BIRTHDAY

Sorry, Sorry, Sorry

Your apology must be above all sincere and will no doubt have to take several forms, such as flowers, the bigger the bunch the better (no petrol garage or supermarket rubbish either). Verbal affirmations and love letters, be creative with these but truthful. That special restaurant, (no not Maccy D's or the Hot Dog stand on the side of the road), the one you first went to on that hot date or failing that the most expensive one you can find. THINK!

Be resposible for your mistake

Excuses wont do, they WILL make matters worse. Acknowledge wholeheartedly that you messed up.

Subscibe to you partners feelings

Recognise that your partners anger is valid and don't question or challenge any reaction. Try saying, "I can only begin to imagine how you must be feeling".

Organise a special occasion to rectify your error

A week(end) away, a night at a luxury hotel, or an extremely thoughtful present are a neccessity. Do not show up days later with an armful of pressies, hoping for forgiveness, (although it can work on the odd occasion). All the gifts in the world won't excuse the need for talking the matter through.

A proper apology should always include the following:

 - a detailed account of the situation

 - acknowledgement of the hurt or damage done

 - taking responsibility for the situation

 - recognition of your role in the event

 - a statement of regret

 - asking for forgiveness

 - a promise that it won't happen again

 - a form of restitution whenever possible

And - accept some people will never forget it. My Dad forgot my mother's birthday when they'd only been married 24 years, and 11 years later, my sister hasn't forgiven him!

It's not constant, but she does take the piss a week or so before my mother's birthday (-:

At least he doesn't forget now LOL. I bet the pressies are bigger, better and more thoughtful too.
