BASAVANNA,a social reformer of 12th century was a great philosopher, saint,economist and more over a champion of human values.his concern for the social equality of all irrespctive of caste or creed or genderis important even today after 9 centuries.he was the first religious to give both social and religious equality to women in a soceity where women were treated as bonded labourers male community.this earned a great place for him in the world history. he reformed the veerashaivism and made it the religion of masses.born to a brahmin parents, he rejected the wearing of the sacred threadin traditional ceremony and walks out of his house at the age of 8 and continues his education at a temple 60 kms away with a learned teacher. after worshipping kudala sangama - diety of the temple he loved till his end for a long period, he was employed at the palace of king bijjala, a kalachuri king as an accountant. he obtains the appreciation of the king for his intelligent accountingand promoted as the treasurer of the kingdom and later elevated aas the prime minister . in his religious reveloution, he rejected the vedic culture and preached that every human being is equal in eyes of god. his new philosophy was widely accepcted by the sociall y ,economically ,educationally backward class people, who were exploited by theupper caste people of hinduism.he liberated them from this social evil to lead a dignified life . this revolution has attracted people from far away places like kashmir to keralato his place in northern karnataka. india's first secular , democratic parliament was established at basava kalyana -capital of the kalachuri kingdom, where in every one could have discussed socio-economico-religious issues with out any hesitation. he used to feed all who visits his house(mahamane) in dasoha-providing free food from his own earnings. this brought a fellow feeling among his admires and followers.the vedic brahmins and other traditional people vehemently opposed this developement and brings the rift between the king and basavanna.he goes to such an height that a brahmin( uppeer caste) love with a dalit (untouchable) boy and the protogonists tries to prevent this revolution which was never heard in the history and the king orders to kill them. this culminates in blood revolution and basavanna was expelled from that kingdom.besides this revolutionary thinking, he also wrote vachanas-small poems in kannada that tell the summary of vedas and upanishads which were forbidden to common people du ring 12th century. he dies at the age of 64 at kudala sangama where river krishna ana malaprabha meets.
