WWII - Somewhere In The Pacific
66A Watercolour Painting of HMAS Canberra - presented to the USS Canberra
World War II and my father - a Surgeon Lieutenant Commander, was posted somewhere in the Pacific Ocean quite possibly aboard the HMAS Canberra - I am unsure of the exact ship the below incident occured on - however after looking at his service records I am led to believe it may have ocurred onboard the HMAS Canberra ....because both the story and the date of his promotion to a more senior rank are almost in accord.
and so the story goes.......Seems my father was sitting at dinner opposite the Captain of the ship when said Captain started - once more - bullying one of his naval officers quite unmercifully. He went on and on and on until my father could bear it no more and asked the ship's Captain to desist. He declined and said the usual - that it was his ship, he could speak as he saw fit etc. etc.after all he was the Captain and his word was law and that quite apart from anything else he was the most senior officer aboard and that no one outranked him. So on this basis he apparently felt quite free and able to demean anyone as he saw fit.
Well unbeknown to this somewhat pompous individual, my father had received only the night before his new orders via telegram from the Australian Naval Headquarters, advising him that he had been duly promoted. This had the effect of making him senior to the ship's captain. The fact was that he hadn't got around to telling anyone of his new promotionm so no one onboard was aware that he had in fact, risen in the ranks.
The ritual humiliation and bullying at the Captain's table continued, so quietly he left the dining room and went down to his cabin where - not having the required gold braid to sew onto his sleeves - he constructed a look-alike golden, braided band from the gold paper liners from his cigarette pack. He hurriedly sewed those golden pieces of paper braid onto the sleeves of his naval uniform and then returned to the dining room. The addition of this additonal full stripe advertised his promotion to those who took the time to look and register.
After my father returned to the dining room he resumed his seat at the table directly opposite the ship's captain. resting his arms within the Captain's eye view - arms that were encased in the sleeves of his naval jacket bearing the newly sewn on gold stripe. ....
"Sir?" was the immediate response......

Thanks ag and unfortunately I think you may be right about the ongoing bullying, seems to be more prevalent today than ever before...why I don't understand..but what I like about this story (bearing in mind that we - as in his children -all collect these "father" stories like diamonds) is the way he dealt with this problem which was in such contrast to that of the Captain...and so we learn more about him!.... cheers and thanks for your words..
WWII Somewhere In The Pacific
Great insight~~~!!!
Great story! Too funny! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this story. I like your father -- sounds like a great man.
I love that story, AJ! Sounds like he handled it with class and style!
Nice "father story" and nice "WWII-hero" story too. My father was a WWII veteran too, and I always like to see any kind of story about WWII experiences told.
wonderful! My grandfather was rather into the naval way of arguing, too - flat statement, followed by a flat contradiction, and the higher rank won.
Good to hear your story about your grandfather. I'm planning to write a hub also about my late unseen grandfather during the world war 2. Hope wecan trace our family tree since he died during the war and my miother and grandma did not see him after that.
tickled my funny bone - JamaGenee - thanks for commenting....
glad you like the sound of my Dad - Teresa McGurk - only my older brothers knew him well but we younger ones didn't so we love the stories - we're all sooks I guess....cheers and thanks
Thanks Christoph - I thought also that he handled in a quiet but witty way where he made his point without humiliating anyone...style is also always good - I agree...cheers and thanks
glad you can identify Lisa HW - I love all the stories about mateship and action etc - not the tales of death and destruction though...thanks and cheers
Thanks London Girl - I found his non explosive method very effective particularly the ending - your grandfather sounds like a great guy - maybe you should do some hubs on him and his naval experiences ....cheers
I look forward to your hub on your grandfather LadyVenus - Hope you can trace your family members - in my case it was my father in the above hub...cheers and thanks
He pulled the equivalent of a "Royal Flush"....classic

Annie I bet your dad became the hero of all the downtrodden on that ship. Unfortunately I think this sort of belittleing behaviour still happens today.
